Updating component version breaks existing design

Not even really sure how to describe or title this one. I have two relevant (I think) designs here. A main one with lots of sketches, bodies, references and lengthy history to boot. I also have another design that I used for checking sizing that contains just a few imported .STL meshes that I would frequently overlay onto my main design.
Now, seemingly all of a sudden, whenever I try to press the 'update out-of-date components' button to update the main design's reference to my little side design (no other components are out of date here), everything breaks. 40 warnings and 83 errors pop up on a design previously containing 0 of either one. I can't seem to figure out why updating this reference would cause this, especially due to the fact that the reference is to a design without any actual 'substance' to it, just a few meshes and nothing that I would have actually been able to reference that somehow got broken.
To make matters worse, no matter what I do I am unable to ever press the 'update out-of-date components' button or let my main design do any computing or else it will break. Even rolling back both designs together to hours, days, even weeks old versions (where I know for a certain fact that there were no issues) still causes all of the errors to appear. This is especially puzzling since it was just working a few mere minutes ago, when I updated some other components and the whole design recalculated just fine.
I wish that I could provide better documentation or information about my problem but I am just at a complete lack of understanding for what may be happening. I'd love to hear people's thoughts on this issue and am of course willing to try to answer any questions you might have.
