circle segmentation in stl export

Hey guys,

I wanted to know if there is a way to limit segmentation of round geometries in stl-export other than the refinement option. Like adding rules for different diameters (e.g. <5mm diameter =20 segments; >5mm diameter=100 segments).

My main problem with same segmentation rules for all diameters is that smaller geometries tend to flood the movement-buffer of the 3d-printer and as a result lags occur.

I would start by turning on the Preview Mesh option in the Save as STL dialog, so you can preview the mesh.  Second, I would recommend a Custom mesh refinement.  From there, you can tweak parameters of the mesh refinement to get the mesh you want.  Most probably, the parameter you are most interested in is the Surface Deviation parameter.  That will let you control the accuracy of the faceting of the mesh, as it relates to circles and cylinders.

Here is a screencast:

Thanks for your fast reply Jeff but this is not what i was looking for since it changes meshing for all geometries equally.

My problem is that i need the segmentation to increase when the diameter gets bigger but at the same time decrease for smaller diameters as it is unnecessary information that causes 3d-printers on 8-bit processors to lag since the printer moves faster than the processor can load new information into the movement-buffer.

Nope. Neither in Fusion 360 not in any other software I know.

You could try creating multiple stl files with different segmentation settings, then recombining them in MeshMixer or other mesh editor.

Splitting the bodie into several parts for refinement was my first idea aswell but it is a pain in the ass.

I will leave this thread open, maybe someone has a less annoying workaround.

Maybe Jeff or some other developer could hint me to the files of the stl export so i can try to write some add-in to fix this problem.

Well i guess this is a topic for the idea-section then.

Thank you for all your answers!

IMHO the API only allows you to configure what you can configure on the UI.

Rhino has an option for minimum edge length but I think this is overridden by some other default tolerances to a certain degree.

Here's an example default setting at the bottom and a 2mm minimum at the top although it seems something is overriding the 2mm in places. Don't know if there is any other software out there with the minimum edge setting.
