Unreliable sketch geometry in offset command

I have this problem often: when I attempt to offset a closed perimeter it won't let me select all of the geometry.  This is extremely annoying.

See screencast:

model attached.

I can't figure out how to post a screencast.

I click insert, then post, and I get this:

Just use the "link" attach in the reply menu to enter the Screencast URL in the body of your message.

Hi ,
Also all project line can't make a chain selection offset from it even if we use break line
is there a logic for this case ?

aliobidi_0-1644718007170.png

in your case I think maybe it's bugged

The geometry you are trying to Offset is mismatched, the curved sections have to be done separately.  You get the same result.  Take a look at the Screencast.  You will get a closed constrained profile on either side of the offset.

Here is my screencast (maybe): https://autode.sk/3uMjJcn

Thanks for the reply John,

How do you know the geometry is "mismatched"?  And why is it "mismatched" in the first instance but not in the second?  I can't tell what i'm doing differently.  Also, this happens sometimes with straight lines.

The super annoying thing is, I don't usually find out about it until much later in the project when I go to project geometry and discover this.

@jhackney1972 can you explain in more detail what you mean with "mismatched"?

There are 2 sketches in @accountsEFWLY's design. the 1st one is the original, the 2nd was created by projecting all of the sketch items from the 1st one into the 2nd sketch.

The 1st sketch presents no problems whatsoever when you are trying to offset the sketch. My expectation would be that the 2nd sketch behaves identical, yet it does not.

IMHO what @accountsEFWLY and @aliobidi are reporting here is a bug that is many years old. The offset operation in the search engine has had problems since its inception and this is one of them.

in a variety of ways up to the breaking of the contour!

I think this is a separate issue, and I would also call it an issue... when trimming a line/curve Fusion deletes constraints unnecessarily.  I try to avoid breaking/trimming/extending because of this.

Below is a gif of the attach screencast bug (which showed the offset bug in fusion):

Hi,

Please show on screenshots which trimming action leads to the loss of constraints. Then weu can check and comment on it.

As others noted this is surely a bug. As a remedy selecting by Selection Set works:

Hi Günter,

Before I spend another sizable chunk of time reporting more bugs, I'd like Autodesk to acknowledge this one and fix it.  I've been using fusion360 (or bugs365 as we call it here) for about 5 years and I run into this one often.  Surely it's a known bug... or else I would have to assume Autodesk doesn't use/test their own software.

I'm cynical; it seems that bugs are reported, simple/fundamental/necessary features are requested, and nothing appears to be done.  Had I known things would be this bad 5 years ago I would have taken a different route as far as CAD/CAM goes.

I'm a mechanical engineer/software developer and I'm convinced that if I had the source code I could fix many of these problems on my own.  So I get annoyed that a large? company like Autodesk allows these embarrassing bugs to persist.  My outsider's perspective says that the priorities are wrong.  Fixing these fundamental bugs is critical IMO.  I get annoyed that as a paying customer I spend the time to point these things out and it just seems to go into the abyss.

Rob

P.S. I encountered a new-to-me bug while sketching today.  Just another in the seemingly endless cascade of bugs.

From the Autodesk Community Feedback Hub Weekly Updates Thread:

January 27, 2022 Update

"Under investigation

  • Screencasts cannot be embedded by normal users permissions anymore but by Expert Elites - @JDMather @TheCADWhisperer - Workaround to post screencast recording for non-Expert Elite members, since the embedding is not working, is to provide the direct link. Unfortunately, this is the only update we can give you on this now. For some background, Expert Elite vs normal users, in terms of backend permissions, Expert Elite members have more permissions and benefits through support and other elements from being an Expert Elite member, which is why they are able to do this action."

Maybe have the error message say that instead of "Your post has been changed because invalid html was found..."

John,

I'm switching back here to address your statement of this bug being acknowledged:

"The link you attached has already been hashed over and determined to be a flaw in the application which they have acknowledged."

I disagree.  I see it acknowledged by @TrippyLighting and @hamid.sh. but nothing from Autodesk (that I can tell).

The only post from Autodesk in this thread (that I can tell based on signatures) is regarding the unintuitive method for non elites to post screencasts.

This is a major major huge important serious fatal bug.  It's wrecking my life.  I'm in the process of looking into other CAD packages because Fusion DOES NOT WORK.

help.

Also, offsetting my closed profile piecemeal does not work either.  I have done that in the past (to work around the original bug), but this time it's not working.  I get a message saying something like "the geometry does not overlap" (it begins as a closed, constrained profile, which is projected to another sketch, then failed offset).

Message 16 is a message that they are looking into one of your forum questions, Screencasts.  You are correct, I do not see any "official" acknowledge from Autodesk for the Offset issue.  It seems to have been acknowledged by numerous Forum users so I am sure it has the attention of Autodesk.
