unable to create anything on the top surfacer

I am following a tutorial, and everything seems fine until they say to create something, say a rectangle on the top. no matter what I try, the rectangle always appears on the bottom surface, and refuses to move in the z direction. Im wondering if I turned off/on something by mistake? Previously I made a flat shape, then extruded it up to make a solid if this helps? It is selecting fine as a body, but the rectangle won't select as a whole even on the bottom, I can only select the individual lines. I have tried turning the other layers off, but it still won't have it.

If I am reading your issue correctly, you are creating the second sketch, your rectangle, on the same origin plane as your first sketch.  Select the surface of the solid body, then right click and select Create Sketch to place your sketch on the top surface.

it would be helpful to include more visual information with your question.  pics, a screen cast, your model.  something to give more indication of where you might be going wrong.

a link to the tutorial (and the time stamp) might also be helpful.

I have tried that, but it deselects when I select the tool, or won't let me select anything but the whole body?

I have included a Screecast of what I think your process is.  As @laughingcreek mentioned, you need to give more information in your forum questions so others can help both quicker and more direct to your exact problem.  If you are in a tutorial, the hyperlink and timestamp in the tutorial is needed, if you have a model with a problem attach it.  Also screen captures will help explain your issues and best of all a Screencast.  You will find quick help for the forum users if you post your questions in this form.

OK, To keep it simple, I tried to copy you and just did a rectangle, extruded it, and then it still won't let me select a surface?Screenshot 2020-06-09 at 20.54.10.pngScreenshot 2020-06-09 at 20.54.43.pngScreenshot 2020-06-09 at 20.54.31.png

check your selection settings, just to make sure you didn't disable face selection.

Check your Select choices on the end of the toolbar.  You must have Body Surfaces checked.  Just use the Select All check is the easiest method.  You also can use the Selection Priority command to chose Face Priority but then you have to turn it off later to select other entities.
