Tool behaviour - unexpected

I go to make an extrusion from a sketch and the dialogue box indicates 'new body' but then after entering a dimension it changes to join. I'd rather the application not make such decisions on my part as it makes for wasted of time, and aggravation. I think a default should be assignable to such a tool dialogue and the user in control of any change.

Yeah, it tries to infer stuff about the behavior you want. Just from my observations, I believe it does this:

- if the volume of the new body is mostly inside another visible body it defaults to Cut

- if the volume of the new body is mostly outside other bodies but it intersects or contacts other bodies it assumes Join

- if the body wouldn't touch any other ones it defaults to New Body.

It can't pick that default until you pick an extrusion size because, in your example, if you extruded it backwards it wouldn't contact the body and it'd leave it as New Body.

Sometimes it's mildly annoying but on the whole, now that I understand how it works, it gets it right more than half the time which means it's saving me clicks, overall.

Correct!

Also, you can override the automatic operation selection.  If you choose an operation type, Extrude will keep that option.  See this screencast:
