Timeline strange behaviour

Hi all,
don't know why, but if I take one random item in the timeline and drop it somewhere else on the vertical line, it disappears and also some earlier components disappear.

Is this normal?

Can you explain the intent? It's not clear from your description what you are trying to do. The timeline runs along the bottom of the screen, and you mention the browser (the reference to "vertical" line). You cannot drag timeline items to the browser.

Perhaps a video made with Autodesk Screencast would better explain.

Thanks,

I had assumed that by "vertical line" he meant the Timeline position marker.

You shouldn't be able to drop anything from the timeline in the browser. My guess is, that you drop it somewhere at the timeline.

Can you screnncast to show what you're exactly doing?

@dean.dekovic_gideon.brothers  Sorry for not understanding what you are asking. I think I know where to start, and you don't need to make any videos yet.

First I would recommend watching a couple videos that explain some of the actions of the timeline. These are made by Fusion 360 customers and enthusiasts.

Fusion Timeline Tips:

How to use the timeline:

If you still have questions, please let me know.

I can only say that I've seen strange behavior in the timeline and I've seen things vanish a few times but have not been able to necessarily reproduce it.

Hi,

Sorry for not providing enough details.

it happens in fusion 360 desktop app.

@TrippyLighting provided a nice example.

So the thing is: I double click on an icon in the timeline. But the mouse precision and my hand micro movement appear to move the pointer on the vertical line (position marker) and the icon seems to “drop” on it and disappear. Also some components in the model disappear, and some timeline features.

It is not always the case because joints don’t disappear this way, they are moved to that position where the timeline marker is, refreshing the joint and model. Sketches and extrudes do disappear so undo solves the problem.

I cannot not share the model unfortunately, but will try to make an example and screencast it.

Thanks to all

Hi, sorry for the delay, had some priorities to deal with.

video2 description - Moved a sketch icon between two icons and it caused a big delay and you can hear me clicking with no effect. Once the sketch description appears, I can input with the mouse, but there is no effect because the model is semi-destroyed and must always ctrl+z to undo.

Don't remember exactly but the component in the video had the timeline rolled back.
Cannot share the design, unfortunately.

Thanks and best regards,
Dean

Thanks for that.

It's pretty hard to tell what's happening but here's what I think you may be seeing:

1. When you move things like sketches in the timeline, you are changing the history of the part. If there are dependencies that matter "in the flow of time" you might very well blow up your model. Can you help me understand why you might need to move things like sketches in this way? Is this something you do often with good reason?

2. When you change the order of the timeline, some amount of re-compute happens. Compute happens when you make a change in "time" and the model has to be rebuilt with these changes in place. That may take a second or two like in your video, and for large assemblies, could take many seconds.

@TrippyLighting Do you have any words of wisdom here?

Thanks,

@Phil.E no, not really. I've seen this on rare occasions just double clicking on the sketch symbol and the sketch symbol vanished from the timeline.

If I come across this again I will share the model.

1. It’s no good reason, ti is by accident. 100% of the time this situation on the video appears when I try to double click on a sketch/feature/joint to edit it, but I accidentally micro move the sketch left or right. In those situations seems that the vertical position marker on the left or right of that item is an abyss between two icons, and the icons can disappear in it.

Also it seems that the vertical position marker when moving a sketch is too sensitive to item movements. If you don’t double click some timeline icon seemingly on their vertical axis, it will very often move like in the video. It appears also that this double click area is slim and you have to be very accurate when double clicking to edit, sketches, features, or any other timeline icon.

2. Understand. I’m fully aware of the timeline and the computing Fusion has to do when moving items in the timeline.

Regards,

Dean

Have you tried using the right click menu to make these actions happen?

Yes, I did. no problem with that. Obviously, it is convenient and faster to double click. Smiley Happy
