swap individual patterned components for another component

I am creating a hexagonal tube made from finger jointed wood. After creating the design (with no small amount of trig to get things in the right position) I realized it would be better to modify a small part of the patterned component, but only on 4 of the 6 instances. Is there any good way to select some but not all of the instances of the component in the pattern and swap them for other similar components? If not, does anyone have a better way to conceive of the problem that would give me other options? Thanks!

One way would be to create a pattern of just points to use as joint origins.  Use these to place the individual components.

You could also use the Suppress feature of a pattern to place only identical components.  Use a new pattern for each set of identical components.  Use the same settings in all of the patterns except for the Suppress option.

As @etfrench mentioned joints are a good way to do this. Depending of your design a combination of pattern and joints might be less work.

Can you share your model ?

I have an idea of how to do what you want to do but it would helpmeet having a visual of what you are trying to do.

You could use 2 separate but equal  patterns for the two different components and then simply suppress those instances in each pattern you don't need.

There is a limitation and bug to contend with.

The limitation  is that the seed component cannot be suppressed. But you can use "Remove" (not delete) to eliminate it.

The bug - this is about 3 years old now - is that when you edit the pattern feature does not remember wha was suppressed and everything that was suppressed is now un-suppressed.

@ryan.bales could you check out if there is any work being done on this or if it is even still an open bug ?

I think i found it although i haven't repro'd it yet. It may have been inadvertently fixed but if you can repro let me know.

@lichtzeichenanlage, that is a sweet video and a fair alternative from what i understand the issue to be.

@stevenabird, if you want to share a file with us please do so we can see what you mean exactly

@ryan.bales I did see it earlier, but cannot reproduce it now. I'll keep a watch on it.

Is this what you are asking for?

Here you can see the assembly with six identical lengths all the way around. To the side you can see the part I want to replace four of those parts with.
