Sub Components

In the Browser, I am trying to drag a component and place it under another component, inorder to create a sub-component. But it does not want to move. I am in the Model workspace, both are components, the main one is set to be Grounded (fixed).

It looks easy in this tutoral.

What do I need to do to get get it to be a sub-component?

Hi Kevin,

I tried  your workflow on my machine and I do not have any problem – you can see my video - similar to HELP.

Could you check when you move (Drag&Drop) components that you drop it on other component item? It means not under Component browser item.

If you still not able to do that then I would like to  ask you for your design to check it.

Hi Pavel,

I tried what you did with a new design. It works as you show. Sometimes a little touchy. It does not always want to highlight the target component. I will have to keep trying a little more.

My other concern with trying to set Joints for screws (in a separate post) is holding me up. I am not sure what is causing the error message and how to resolve it.

I can drag and drop in a new design. But in my larger project design, I still cannot drag and components under other components. This is not a major issue, I am using the work-around below.

My "work-around" is:

1. from the Browser, to create a New Component under the main project Active Component.

2. Then promote that new component to be the Active Component (black dot in white circle)

3. Under it you can create additional sub-components and temporarily create a body, copy paste or move the bodies that you wand under that component branch. Then delete the bodies that you made to temporarily create the folder structure for that new component.

4. While a component is set to be the Active Component, you can also Insert downloaded Components and they will automatically be added under the sub-component.

Using this method is not the best, but it helps to keep organization of complex components (parts). You must keep track of which Component is Active. It is easy to forget.

Hi Kevin, I had seen your problems in my machine too. But only files that were made before they changed over to the WIP. Only bodies can be drag and drop to other components. Not selected components to Main Component to form sub components. Your work around is good. I also noticed that dragging selected group of components to another component might freeze up the machine as well. Again this only happened to old files made before the WIP movement. I did exactly what you had done. I created a new component under a main component and drag and drop the bodies from outside component to this new component. New files made after WIP did not seems to have these kinds of problems.

Hi Pavel, I already solved those old file problems by converting them to Direct Modeling mode. Maybe there were some operations that was done in the old ways could not be changed to the new form successfully. By the ways, those older files did not have errors on the timeline. Maybe the member who made the original post can send you his file.
