Stumped in Lars' for beginners part 3 of 3: vertex and asymmetry

1) In only one instance in part 3, Lars says to "click on this vertex". No mention had been made about what a vertex is. When I hover the location he points to, I never get any kind of a snap icon.

2) When using the symmetry tool, I'm only allowed two points. Lars uses three points to make the lid.

Those two little things are holding me from completing the tutorials and moving on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't seen the video (what is the link), but a vertex is the endpoint of a line, arc or edge.

You might have to P (Project Geometry) first.

Thank you for the response. The vertex part is from 5:17 to 5:38. The
symmetry part from 8:15 to 8:33.

For point 1, the interface has changed, I don't mean the icons and workspace appearance stuff, but the Offset Plane Dialogue box is now updated,

Where the Distance input is, you now have a dropdown menu, select Object there.  Clicking on the endpoint of his box face should then select.

Because you have selection problems in both examples, check the Selection (menu) > Selection Filters and make sure sketch points are ticked.

Other than that did you select the Symmetry constraint lower down? it sorta looks like the parallel icon too.

I helped another thread on this video, and it was Preference settings, if yours are the same as his, will make a difference.

Might help.....

Thank you for your suggestions. I really appreciate it. Both problems solved! Here's what I learned: All of the sketch filters were selected by default. While previously trying to click on the vertex, I was never able to get a snap que (the little blue circle). So I assumed I had made a mistake leading up to that. This time-- I zoomed waaaaaay in like never before and discovered a really faint snap que (my term), clicked it, it worked. The Symmetry issue was a repeat of the vertex problem. Just had to zoom in much more than all previous steps. I have cheap monitors, and my video cards were installed in 2011. I suspect I need to upgrade my gear. Thanks again for the help.
