Snap to Reference Geometry (point) - Why won't it work?

I am trying to follow along in Lars Christensen's tutorial on Youtube and cannot replicate how he is able to snap to the reference point shown at 5:32.

I have read other suggestions and have "Auto Project Edges on Reference" on in my Preferences, but cannot use the "To Object" to attempt snapping to any point on the referenced object (conduit body).

What else might I be missing or need to try?

Thanks in advance,

Delain

To position the new plane?

That is an older video, Fusion has been upgraded over time, and now you have two choices,

Mouse over the vertex between the faces of the plate and fillet at the edges, the vertex position will highlight, and left click on that point, or,

Change the Dialogue Box selection type from Distance, to Object, and select the inside face of the box, this version will maintain the parametric association, so that a changed box will take this new plane with it, the first version would not allow that, unless you are selecting the vertex as an object.

Might help...

I do appreciate your response, but I'm not following your suggestions. I understand Fusion 360 has changed since Lars did the video.

Yes, I'm trying to position a new plane and position it relative to an existing edge or face.

My first attempt at using Screencast shows my preferences and "Auto Project Edges on Reference" is enabled.

Then I hover the pointer over a few edges and curves to demonstrate that, prior to the Construct/Offset Plane command, it will highlight the referenced geometry. This makes me think I should be able to snap to those points.

However, once I start the command and select To Object, the referenced edges and faces no longer are selectable. I cannot snap to them as Lars does in the video and as your steps seem to say.

What am I still not understanding or need to do?

(Well, the Screencast did not appear to get inserted by the forum app. Not sure what went wrong.)
Thanks in advance,
Delain

The forum is broken, has been for years.

So, I wasted an hour trying to post a Screencast?

Should I use some other app to create a video that I can attach separately?

Also, can someone direct me to an explanation of how to attach or upload(?) a copy of my design file to a post. I see that request in other posts.

Thank you,

Delain

you can still post the screen cast, you just can't use the tools at the bottom of the reply page. either copy/paste the link in the body of your response or embed the html.

export your file as an .f3d and save to your computer

Thanks for this. I pasted the link since I could not get the HTML embed to work. Forum app was throwing up an HTML error for invalid code. And that is with using the code that Screencast created for the link.

Seems to be a lot of shaded clutter in the window.  (Couldn’t tell what you were trying to select.)

Hide the Lid body 1, with the eyeball,

Select Other not working?

Check your selection filters, make sure Select All and Select Through are ticked.

(In the Select down arrow, menu.)

Your preference setting is relevant for sketch creation, not work planes.

If still stuck, File > Export, Save to hard drive, in the forum page, Attachment section below, click on the word browse and select your file.

Might help....

Dave,

Thank you for your help.

Not sure about the shaded clutter or what to do about it at this point in my learning.

I thought the Lid Body was hidden; eyeball is disabled.

ALL of my Selection filter options are/have been enabled.

Attached is the design file and a screenshot showing the point on the Body of the "box"  that Lars is able to snap to when using that point as a "To Object" reference for locating the Plane.

snap to point1.jpg

I cannot get that point to be selectable within the Construct/Offset Plane command.

Thank you,

Delain

so I think this is a bit of a UI problem (understatement).  The snap point is actually showing up and is available to use.  here is a screen shot from your screen cast-

laughingcreek_0-1643838960194.png

there is a verrrrrrrry faint dot at your cursor showing that vertex selection point.   if you try things like changing the environment, or unchecking active component display it show's up a little better (sometimes)

@jeff_strater Looks like some things have changed, recently.

I got it to do as required. but the select highlight is almost invisible, (change)

What I did,

open the box Component, down arrows to expand the listings to this,

chslct.PNG

Start the Offset Plane command, select source plane

hover over the point required and when the Body name in the browser turns blue, left click

And ignore the dialogue option for the offset, (new change) and press Ok.

Jeff - it appears that the window highlight is turned off, hovering over a window object (face, edge, vertex and any sketch objects - tried that too, ) does not highlight anymore, but the body name in the browser does highlight, so with a blind leap of faith carry on, and the plane is created in preview with a new option to offset, probably a good thing, not sure.

Window highlighting is preferred, here.

Excellent!!

@laughingcreek - I cannot believe you spotted the highlighted point you mentioned; amazing!

I re-watched the screencast and still cannot see that point with the "Active Component Display" enabled.

So, yes, disabled that preference and now I can make the command work and snap to that specific point.

@davebYYPCU  - Good suggestion and now I know this is another option for picking objects(?) in the design.

Sidenote - Why did you reference jeff.strater in on this?

I'm assuming that when you use the @ with a username, it sends a direct notification and link to the thread to that user?

I'm still learning the scheme of this forum functionality.

Thank you very much for the help and good explanations.

Correct, I referenced Jeff for a heads up, to have him double check on the window object select highlighting Problem, he is a busy guy, and may turn up here to add an Autodesk take on it.

In your video, the point is previewed white, in the old days it would be previewed in a highlight colour, black or red dependant on the Tool being used.

As I have not seen the Offset Dialogue section, for an object selection in workplanes, (my normal workflow) before, I’ll presume the 2 are related.

I don't think anything has changed in this area.  The highlight is dim because it is on a non-active component.  I agree, though, that it is not a good UI, because the selection preview should not be dimmed with the component.  As you say, disabling "Active Component Visibility" will make this better.  The other thing I noticed from the screencast was that ground shadow is turned on, which also gets in the way.
