Smooth out corners? (was compute error on slice)

I'm trying to slice a body with two splines that are mirrored across an axis.  The first split succeeds, but when I try to slice with the mirrored spline I get a "failed to compute" error with no additional information

I fixed the compute error by extending the slice.

 

Now my issue is how to make the transition between the body parts smooth - see circled area

I want to get the slice to slice along the contour of the extruded part.

I thought of using fillets like that, but what I'm looking for is more like there being one line on the bottom of the contour like this

I would start this from scratch!

If this is supposed to be a symmetric design, then it should center about the origin, for example.

That's exactly what I'm looking for!  I have to say I don't understand a couple things

 

In Sketch 2 you have a purple (?) line across the top of the body - what purpose does that serve?

Step 12 - totally threw me off with the Plane2 step and following sketches.  I don't understand how those work.  Looks like magic 😎
