Sketch: Snap Line To Grid In Move

I'm in a 2D sketch on the YZ plane, and I need to project a horizontal line from a point on a profile back the to Z axis.

 

  • If I use Move on an existing constrained line, using the horizontal arrow, it will not snap.
  • If I draw a new line from the origin point, and specify 0° angle to constrain to horizontal, it will not snap.

 

Regardless of how far I zoom in, I cannot get the end point of the line to Z=0, it will inevitably end up at some minuscule amount off, eg 1.2034E-07.   That's very close, but it isn't zero.

 

As F360 is no doubt used for precision engineering, there must be some way to do this?

your observations are correct.  Grid snapping only works when:

  • drawing curves or points (does not work in Move)
  • you are otherwise constraining the motion (new line, constrained to 0 degrees)

It only works when the geometry is completely free.  I agree that makes it less useful, which is why I never bother with it - I always have grid snapping disabled.  That's what dimensions are for, IMO - if you want precision, dimension it.  Grid snapping is not a constraint anyway - just snapping to a grid at creation time does not guarantee that it will stay on that grid point.

You can use the Point to Position option in the Move/Copy command to find exact zero or any other point you desire simply by entering the value.  There is the other option also, Point to Point, a point on my sketch to a point on your screen.

Thanks John. I've used Point to Point, hadn't really understood Point to Position, which is something I should also be using.
