sketch loop selection?

Hi,

How can I select a loop in a sketch? For example the outline of this one, to delete it:

loop.PNG

Does the software really force me to select each individual segment of a loop manually or am I missing something?

If it does, that's just mean.

Especially since the functionality is there in the offset tool, but only for making offsets, it does not allow me to just select the loop:

loop select.png

Please tell me that option also exists for normal selecting of line loops.

Thanks.

Hi, I don't think there currently is, but once you do select the desired sketch geometry, you can right click and choose Create Selection Set so that it can be immediately all selected again from the Browser tree in the future.  Also holding Shift down (in Windows) and dragging from right to left will allow accumulating selections of everything the selection box partially contains during repeated selection box operations.

No, that poption STILL is not present int the sketch engine. I've created an Idea in the Idea station for this a while ago.

Fusion is developed by differnt teams that work on different aspects of the software. Keeping the UI and functionality consistendt across all areas I amigaine is a big challenge. A challenge that has not been fully met IMHO.

Hi jjurban55,

thanks for the reply.

However, dragging a box across the whole sketch is at least as counter-productive as selecting every single line manually.

Creating a selection set is a good tip for many situations, but also not useful if you are trying to select a loop that you want do delete or just modify once.

This is especially frustrating since the functionality is there in the offset and also the web tool, it is just not implemented in the selection tool.

So basically the program shows you that it is able to do it, it just won't let you use it in the right way.

This really sucks and makes working a lot less productive.

@TrippyLighting:

I voted for your Idea.

I also realize it is a challenge to keep the UI consistent, but this is a basic function that is already there in another tool, so it is definetely not aksing for much to have it in the selection tool.

I think this goes in hand with the lack of resizing and rotating ability for sketch elements, an "idea" that has been marked as accepted over a year ago here:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/ideastation-request-a-feature-or/add-scale-and-rotate-to-the-sketch-t...

I dont get how a software this sophisticated can lack the most basic features.

Hi, what I was describing with the selection box was for when some of the desired sketch elements are somewhat aligned with each other.  Then they can be instantly collected with a long narrow selection box for instance, and with Shift can then continue collecting more elements.

The software is extremely empowering and doesn't write people off, such as being demonstrated by the very innovative licence model that opens up this world to anyone who would come and learn and use.  I wouldn't be too bothered if there's currently not some features that results in a little more time sometimes. 😉  With me personally I've not really been bothered by this selection issue, but I'm sure there are some cases where it would become more of an issue.

Just my two cents.

Thanks for the comments on this issue.  A few comments of my own:

  1. This post, in particular, has sparked a discussion this week between the Fusion dev and UX teams about how to do this.  While that doesn't mean that you will see it implemented next week, it does mean that we are listening closely (though it may appear at times as if we are not).  Side note:  It's not as trivial as it might at first seem, but it does seem achievable.
  2. It doesn't hurt your cause that our CEO also has this same request/frustration Smiley Happy
  3. Regarding the idea station and the rate at which items are actually implemented:  I hope I don't come across as defensive here, but I probably will, so I apologize in advance.  But, take a look at the Idea Station.  The analytics don't seem to be working for me right now, but last time I looked there were well over 1000 of them.  And, frankly, all 1000 of them are good ideas.  And, to the people who submitted those ideas, most are probably very important issues to their workflow, and probably seem to be in this category of "how could Fusion not have this feature?".  But, our resources are finite, our teams are human, and Fusion is a complex piece of software.  We have also been trying mightily to "make the features that are there work better, faster, more stable".  So, unfortunately, we don't make as much progress on this list as you (and the Fusion team, as well) would prefer.  Please bear with us.  We do get there eventually (e.g. progress on hotkeys).  And, we will on this item as well.

Jeff

Yeah, say on the fronts of stability (even when doing all kinds of crazy things), speed performance, etc. I'm absolutely amazed how good it is now (I've only been using Fusion a relatively short time, but long enough to be able to perceive such steady and dramatic improvements...the foundational type of improvements that are invisible for all intents and purposes 😉 )  Amazing work! (of such broadness and complexity, undoubtedly a herculean undertaking)

I hope my comment did not come across as too impatient. I looked just now at when I posted this request in the Idea Station and it was just in September.

But as a customer I reserve the right to be a little impatient. After all I am human as well 😉

Thanks for getting involved, @jeff_strater.

It's nice to actually get some feedback, wich unfortunately is not the case with every company.

I really can relate to having too much on the to do list, and hearing that you CEO struggles with the same issue definetely helps;)

I hope you get to the issue soon. Especially regarding that fusion is very powerful in most aspects, it is a pitty that some things that seem simple compared to that slow you down so much.

I just timed the outline selection of another sketch, which requires zooming in and out to get all the pieces, and it took me about one minute.

Of course that doesn't seem much, but compared to one click or doubleclick, it is a lot, and as you know, over a day or a week it can easily add up to hours of just selecting lines.

Anyway, I know you got the point and I'm glad that you're on it.

Hello jjurban55 I tried selecting a number of sketch faces and then right clicking. The create selection set does not come up the only options are "set orbit center", "reset orbit centre", "extrude" and "show/hide". How do you create a selection set from a selection of sketch elements? Is there another way? Thanks in advance.

@Anonymous this thread is years old and sketch loop selection has been implemented a long time ago. Sketches don’t have faces and the selection set functionality is limited to 3D objects.

the ability to group sketch elements, however, would be nice as would be a number of other vector graphics functions.
