Sketch editing orientation oddity

I am attempting to edit a sketch on the surface of a component. When I slelect edit sketh, instead of orienting the sketch to the screen it rotates it perpendicular. Here is a screencast showing it.

What's the reason Fusion is doing it and how I can I prevent it ?

Thanks for posting about this! From the video, it seems that Fusion 360 is getting confused as to what the normal direction of the sketch plane is. It's clear to see from the plane that the gridlines exisit in. If you redefine the sketch plane, does that help?

Do you have the auto look at sketch option enabled in Fusion 360 Preferences?

Could you test with this option disabled?

If you can share the file with me, I will be happy to report this to development for further investigation.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Hi Nathan,

I've tried to redefine the sketch plane, but that did not seemt to help. Turning off the auto look at sketh option di d stop the behvior but then I had to manually orient the sketch to be parallel to the screen.

I've shared the project with you.The sketch in question is here:

Trying figure out what is going on here I did the following procedure:

1. Right click on the component PCB, select Save Copy As

2. Save the PCB component outside of the design/project

3. Open the PCB component and then perform a Modify > Compute All

Results:

Errors appear in the timeline, including some warning for the first sketch in the timeline.

Hypothesis:

The initial sketch is referencing a construction plane or one of the default planes from the root assembly or from another component. When editing the sketches in the component, this is somehow interfering with "orient to plane" feature being able to determine the correct normal position..

I have reported this to development for further investigation into the cause and a resolution, reference FUS-20759.

As a quick solution you may be able to use the steps outlined above, repair the errors and then re-insert the design into the original component group to resolve the issue.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

I clearly made some progress on my design in terms of the PCB layout last night and I am also pretty sure I saved it as well. Some of the work I did last night seems to be clearly gone and I am wondering whether a previous version has been promoted and saved as the .f3z but then the previous version was not restored.  Smiley Frustrated

There is now a .f3z file in the project folder I know for sure I have not created.

I appreciate help, but if you ( whoever that may be ) work in my project on my files I expect you to keep me informed of what you intend on doing and what I can expet to see BEFORE I find things changed.

*slapping forehead Doh!

I did make an F3Z file so that I could document the reported issue.  I didn't intentionally make any changes to the design and save them to your project. However, in reviewing the design I see that I saved version 106 & 107 in the item details. I suspect I may have left my auto-save feature on by accident while I was reviewing the file. I sincerely apologize for this mistake. My first move is to usually to get the data out of the customer A360 Project and perform tests in my own as to not modify the customer's data. I think I just got lost in the troubleshooting yesterday.

Again, I'm really sorry! I'm happy to go back in and promote the last saved version by you (version 105), to be the latest version and delete the F3Z file. It will be like I was never there...

Just let me know.

Thank You,

Yes, please promote the 105 version!

Thanks!

Thank You!

I've promoted 105 to become version 108 (the latest version) and deleted the F3Z file. You should be back to normal, but let me know if there are any issue.  ...and I'm outta there ***Ninja Smoke POOF***

Cheers,

Thanks!

It is more of an exploratory design and I developed new ideas as I went a long and devaloped geometry. As such there are references from here to there and back, so to speak.

I did not keep track of that and will likely re-factor and clean the design once I've built a few prototypes and know if I can actually build the design as intended.

For now I ned to finish the PCB design, export it into DXF and into Eagle PCB. Then the excrusioating work of re-constructing things in Eagle will require a few beers 😉
