Simulation Error: "WRONGTYPE Operation" - Cannot Start Cloud Solve (Only Affecting My Account)

I'm encountering a persistent and frustrating error when trying to run a simulation (Static Stress study) in Fusion 360, and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on it or offer a solution.

The exact error message I receive is:

EX-4 v2: Simulation Model 1 - Study 1 - Static Stress
_____ 2025-06-24 14:05:26 _____
Starting solve
Error: Unable to start the solve - {"id":"34936d9c-6e61-4de5-a669-db7d20d338eb","code":500002,"codeString":"ErrInternalServerErrorUnknown","message":"Unknown Error","developerMessage":"Unknown Error (NO DB)","moreInfo":{"details":"WRONGTYPE Operation against a key holding the wrong kind of value"}}
Error: Unable to start the solve as we couldn't create the job on the cloud

Key details and what I've tried:

  1. Unique to my account: This is the most puzzling aspect. I'm currently at university, and all my classmates using Fusion 360 on the same network are able to run simulations without any issues. This suggests the problem is specific to my account or my model's interaction with the cloud, rather than a general service outage or network problem.
  2. Autodesk Health Dashboard: I've checked the Autodesk Health Dashboard, and it shows no reported outages or degradation for Fusion 360 or its cloud simulation services.
  3. Basic Troubleshooting:
    • Restarted Fusion 360.
    • Restarted my computer.
    • Checked my internet connection (stable).
    • Verified my cloud credit/token settings in Fusion 360 Preferences.
    • Tried running Fusion 360 as administrator.
    • Confirmed system time is synchronized.
  4. Cache Clearing:
    • I've cleared the in-app Fusion 360 cache via Help > Support and Diagnostics > Clear Cache Data.
    • I also manually went to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Autodesk and moved/renamed relevant folders to force a complete rebuild of the local cache upon restart.
  5. Model Specific Attempts:
    • The issue occurs with my primary model (a [brief description, e.g., complex assembly with many components]).
    • I tried creating a very simple test model (e.g., a basic cube) and running a static stress simulation on it, but the same "WRONGTYPE" error occurred. This leads me to believe it's not specific to the complexity or geometry of my main design, but rather something with my account's ability to initiate any cloud solve.
    • I have tried "dirtying" my main model (making a small change and re-saving) and saving it as a new version.
    • I have also tried exporting my model as an F3Z and re-importing it into a new design.

The "WRONGTYPE Operation against a key holding the wrong kind of value" message, especially with "(NO DB)" and "ErrInternalServerErrorUnknown," seems to point to a database issue on Autodesk's cloud side, but if it's only affecting my account, I'm at a loss for further troubleshooting steps on my end.

Has anyone encountered this specific "WRONGTYPE" error before, especially when others are unaffected? Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated before I contact Autodesk support directly.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi @fltcharles1,

Would it be possible to attach the Diagnostic log files? With that info, we should be able to take a look at your submitted jobs on the back-end.

  • Help pull-down > Support and Diagnostics > Diagnostic Log Files

We apologize for the inconvenience this is causing.

Best regards,

Hi @fltcharles1,

I'm seeing one cloud solve from you that is sitting idle, and noticed that it isn't marked as a Student / EDU account. Instead it is somehow being interpreted as a Personal use entitlement which should have limited access to Simulation.

Could you check the following?

  1. Go to Help > About
    • Take a screenshot (or just a text reply) of what is listed as the "Active Plan:"
      • Help About - Active Plan - Student.png
  2. Go to the Simulation workspace > Click the Solve command
    • Use the 'Show' drop-down to ensure the option is checked to "Display costs and balances"
      • It should show the "Education" as the account type, and the Available balance should display as "unlimited"
      • Solve dialog - Education - Unlimited balace.png
  3. Username pull-down > Preferences > Tokens and Cloud Credits
    • Take a screenshot (or text reply) of the Accounts pane
    • Ensure Education is the active account selected for "Simulation tasks"
      • User Preferences - Tokens and CC.png

I've also started a discussion with our Simulation Development team about this behavior, and this info will provide insight into what might be causing the entanglement(s).

Thank you for providing the detailed info in your original post by the way.

Many thanks for providing the requested info @fltcharles1! Everything appears to be in order, and the ball is now back in our court to continue the investigation on our side.

In the meantime, a temporary workaround could be to create a new trial account, and opt-in for the Simulation Extension. This should provide equivalent access to Simulation as your Student account should have.

I do have follow-up questions:

  1. If you can find the time, I'm curious if you see the same type of error when using Fusion that is hosted on the web?
    • https://fusion.online.autodesk.com/ (available for Students and Commercial licenses)
      • This could further eliminate potential unexpected misbehaviors, such as there still being a local cache somewhere on the machine, or the possibility of other accounts having been used on the same machine. This shouldn't be a problem, but I'm a bit hesitant to rule out the possibility completely just yet...even after you've proactively cleared all you can for the local cache(s) before retrying.
  2. Has the student account ever had a different 'license / entitlement / Active Plan' before (or after) it was granted the Education type?

I'll circle back ASAP with any news from the Engineering team.

Just tried it on the web version and it still gives the same error. Also, the account has only been a student account.

Is there any time frame of how long this might take to get fixed - I'm trying to complete some projects and need a solution ASAP.

Thanks very much.

Hi @fltcharles1,

I'm just checking in to inquire if you're still having trouble sending cloud solves.

The only clue I could gather about your account (with help from a colleague) was an unexpected entitlement for the Fusion Simulation Extension that looked a bit suspicious.

If you're still facing issues could you try:

  1. Username pull-down > Autodesk Account
  2. In the web page go to 'Products and Services' tab
  3. Click the "Access" button for the Simulation Extension (if it appears)
    • Access Simulation Extension via Products and Services.png

Another access point to check is via the in-product Extensions dialog, where Simulation shouldn't be displayed for a Student / EDU account:

Extensions - Power plug in QAT.png

My apologies for the late reply.
