Shared Project no longer editable - Basic Access Issue?

Hi All,

hoping someone can answer my question regarding an issue I was having. A friend and me were working on a shared project ( A project I created and then shared with them) and all was fine until recently he went to make a change to something we were working on and it would not allow him to edit/save/ or save a copy or really anything for that matter. I have not experienced any issues like this before. I started reading thinking one of the previous updates may have changes something and seems there are changes that have been put in place about personal/education licenses? Does this mean people with personal/education licenses can no longer work together/share projects? I hope this is not true and this is just a misunderstanding on my part. Does anyone know a way I can give more then what I think is "basic access" to my friend who was up until recently able to collaborate freely? I read something in the update regarding "teams" does this come into play? If I start a team and then copy all the files to that team and invite to that would it work? A lot of questions I know.

Thanks

Hey Camhouston95,

This is due to our recent change in license entitlements. The personal license type has two limitations: it doesn't have native file translation (AnyCAD), and collaboration is disabled. Sharing your project with someone else will give him read-only access.

Educational licenses do not have these limitations.

We made this change to prevent businesses and individuals from fraudulently using free licenses without qualifying for them (making over $100K per year), which had previously been on the honor system.

All fine and dandy, I can certainly see why AD would head in this direction.  BUT, the 100K a year thing is miss leading.  someone I collaborate with, who is definitely making under 100K , was recently told by her sales person that AD was looking for companies they could showcase, and her's wasn't one of those types of companies, so she would have to by a subscription in order to continue collaborating with me on her designs.  It appears not everybody is on the same page.

The rules for startup licenses have changed, too. Here and here are some details. Major changes beside collaborations are access to GD EDIT: you have to apply for a startup license, no free cloud credits. For personal use you additional cannot import all file types anymore.

Hi,

So what you are saying is if you have a free license there is no way you can interact with any other users directly. Meaning if I have a hobby model and wanted to get some help on it from another personal user, there is no way of doing this? If the user I am sharing with has a pro or ed account they can edit? This seems to be very limiting, but I am guessing that is the intention? Still it makes it hard to really work on personal projects and get help 😕

Yes. IMHO Export / Import is the only way to do this. And it's a PITA, because with the import you're loosing your history.

So there are only two people in my group, me and my buddy. Now were not aloud to share projects for editing. That's BS... So you would rather we lie and say we're educators or a small business?

It's not about laying. You have to apply for startup and education licenses and you have to prove certain things to use those. But sure - you can try and live with piracy.

Try and comprehend what I'm saying.

For only two people using it for personal use, to completely disable the collaboration is overly harsh. It won't let me help my buddy with his designs, (which he is very bad at).

I'm trying to use it legitimately, but I don't fall under any licenses but personal. So to get this this ability re-enabled I would have to lie about the licenses. The information for startup and education can easily be faked, so it's not going to stop pirates in a lot of cases! For all that matters people could just share one login/password.

Export/Import is a idiotic alternative, as well as needlessly time consuming.

This change only makes it more difficult for honest people in small non-professional groups to help each other and grow.

Try and comprehend what I'm saying. If it's fine for you to live with piracy it's up to you what you're faking or not. Not at all. But the license is the license and if you're faking stuff to get a different licenses that could be called piracy. Why? If you can't live with what they're offering for free you could:

  • Choose a different software
  • Exchange files between you and your friend (like you would do it for non cloud based software)
  • Buy a licenses that offers the function you want to have

But you prefer to cheat - so... piracy.

And don't think that I like the new structure. I think they've killed the use of Fusion 360 for opensource projects, simulations for hobbyists etc. But we all don't have to forget that we're getting stuff for free.

We must be on different pages. It's wasn't about me trying to live with piracy or becoming one. It was about expressing my disdain for the new policies, the new hardship for personal users, and the new policies inadiqualtly preventing piracy while hurting small users.

Yeah it's free and I'm grateful for that it's an outstanding piece of software, and I feel for your friend as I do for my friend.

I just got burned by this change today.

It's honestly ridiculous, a few friends and I are in the late stages of a project and now are having to fight how to deal with this change.. I guess export/import will get us by for now.

For our next project we'll be forced to switch over to another CAD system now.. and it really sucks because we've always been big proponents of fusion.  Ugh.
