Scaling decals suggestion

Hi Developers,

I have been using a few decals in my latest project. They work, but could work better than they do.

The issue I run into is that when I scale say x, I will enter in a value to scale and if it is correct I leave it.

If it isn't correct then it seems to turn the scaled decal into a new version of 1:1 and if I want to change

my scaling factor from say 2.1 up to 2.3, instead of it scaling 0.2 larger like I expect, it rescales the entire

decal to the new value of 2.3. This isn't intuitive at all and makes it very difficult to re-calculate the scaling

factor I need. Sometimes just nudging the scale factor by 0.1 over the original will fix the problem but I

end up either having to go back and restart scale at the new value or guess the new scale factor from the

changed decal scale.

It would be much easier to be able to literally click and drag the decal to size it to what I want with an option

to maintain the aspect ratio radio button. It would also make sense that if I am trying to fit a decal onto

something that the change doesn't happen until I click "ok" so that if I want to change it back and start again

it goes back to the original size.

I also ran into an unexpected problem a few months back that might be a useful thing. I was modelling a

racing tyre and attempted to overlay a decal over the tyre. Instead of being able to lay the decal on the

sidewall of the tyre, it wrapped around the inner edge. There was nothing in the centre of the decal or the

tyre. I understand that the software did what it was supposed to do but I can see that there would be some

situations where you actually want to put a decal around a hole, not just tyres. Can this be looked at as a

possible improvement instead of having to cut the decal into smaller pieces to make it fit around the hole?

The cut the decal method sometimes makes aligning the decals in the correct place more difficult. I also

don't think it is possible to create an image file literally with a hole in the middle so it doesn't wrap.

Cheers

Andrew

Isn't that what this glyph does?

But I agree that there should be parametric dimensions for size and position.

Autodesk Inventor Professional permits parametric size, rotation and position dimensions and also Transparent Mask (which I would expect to find in Fusion, but in my quick test I did not find it).

Agree, this could/should work better. I like what @TheCADWhisperer posted about how it works in Inventor.

Sometimes ... actually rather often ... I have the feeling that the Fusion 360 team(s) reinvent the wheel.
