Save as and replace for non-linked components?

So there's "save as and replace" for linked components to allow modifying only one instance of a part that is linked multiple times. However, I can't find something similar to split out a subcomponent that's modeled in the assembly to a seperate file. E.g. I like to start a component in the main assembly file and then later split it out, for which I have to save a copy, remove the original from the assembly, insert the new file back in and recreate any joints. Is there a workaround or script/plugin to facilitate this?

I just went through this. Under the create menu click on derive and it will maintain one way associativity with the assembly file.
