Revolve doesn't use selected axis

I am attempting to cut this groove in the curved face of this part.  I've tried Sweep and Revolve both with a bad results.

I tried the revolve by creating an axis through face and point.  I used the right side of the part and the center point of the radius for the face.  When it cuts its not using the axis I selected therefore it only cuts part of the face.  In the screenshot the orange dotted circle should be the path.  I read a forum post that someone had a similar issue and the response was "You have picked the side of a body that does not go through the axis as your profile." which I don't understand.

Then I tried sweep using the profile and the edge of the face for the path.  It cuts however it doesn't cut all the way through, the bottom is closed.  I know it has something to do with angle of the profile but can't figure out how to fix.

Any input would be appreciated.

Hi,

1. create plane on path

2. create profile on that plane

3. extrude cut end parts

Alternatively, you can extend the path tangentially at both ends before creating the plane.

Then you can do without 3.

You were on the right path to do a Revolve cut but you did two things that got you off.  The first is that your cut profile is on the wrong plane and second you used the wrong revolve axis.  You logic is sound but your execution suffered.  I attach my model and left the sketches on to illustrate better.

Next time please attach your model, it makes answering easier plus it is more relevant to your situation.

@jeff_strater : This looks like a bug.  The selected axis appears to be moved to the same plane as the profile to be revolved.

p.s. Documentation for Revolve does not state the axis must be on the planar face.

Thank you for the detailed solution.  Yes next time I will post my model, my apologies for that.

@etfrench - not a bug so much as questionable design intent.  This was done on purpose, but there is really no reason for it.  Also reported here:  patch-workspace-rotate-seems-to-ignore-chosen-axis (and probably a few more places over the years).  Item FUS-80825 exists for this request.
