remove all constraints in one fell swoop

I'm having problems just moving a line.

I select it, go through the options, ie move at a y distance of -.25, my actions are accepted in the dialog box,  and then the line stays where it is.

I'm figuring it's because of constraints

how do I remove all modeling constraints so I can move things where I want them to be as I want them there

or what else could be the problem ? no jokes necessary re: my intelligence

Hi @Anonymous,

Set your selection filter to only "Sketch Geometry Constraint", window select your entire sketch and hit Delete on the keyboard.

Hello Sanjay,

My drop down looks exactly like yours... but when I change to only "sketch geometry constraints" as your screen shows... the selection tool won't select anything on the screen.  The tool activates, it highlights the area being selected... but as soon as you click to finish the selection, it just goes away.  Nothing selected at all.  I can go right back into the selection filter, hit "select all" to put the filter back where it was, and try again - now it highlights and selects items just like normal.  It just won't do anything when it set it to only "sketch geometry constraint".  Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Thanks, Doug

It would serve you better to learn which constraints are preventing the line from moving.  One reason may be it is anchored on the main Origin.  If that is the case, right click on the Origin and select 'Delete Coincident'.

Thanks for the reply - since posting, I had copied the section that was holding the unwanted constraint, deleted the original, and that freed it up.  Generally speaking, I can find the specific constraint that is causing problems, and delete it... however, sometimes as the designs get more complicated, the relationships are harder to find.  The thing is, I am using Fusion for my plasma table, which is all 2d, and I am generally drawing pictures or lettering, not holding tolerance on 3d objects that must be perfect.  Remedial for Fusion's capability... but the complexity of it's capability causes pain for my simple needs.  If I could shut constraints off altogether, and only activate the ones I need, instead of defaulting them on, and deleting them singularly -it would save me many fits.  Thanks.

Holding the Cntrl or Cmmd key whilst sketching removes automatic constraining.

Might help....

Sanjay, you were correct, I found my issue.

By unselecting all of the selection filters except "constraints", I also shut off the "sketch curves" filter - which is why the items were no longer highlighting.  Your solution is exactly what I needed for my original problem, thanks very much.

This isn't exactly what I was looking for, but is definitely something I will use in other situations moving forward - thanks very much.

I am not geting the solution, it does not work for me. I have 3 different part I want to copy 5 times for 3D printing and join them by 0.01 mm extrude. It is not question if this this how it should be done, but how to do it like this.

The problem is that when I make copies they are not copies, but they inherit features from the original. I just want to make copies without any relations between the parts.

In general for me it would be better not to have any of these very confusing automations, they are wasting enormously my time. I just want to do simple thing simple ways manually, no automation. How do i stop Fusion 360 making all these weird connections?

Copy|Paste New creates copies that are independent of the original. Copy|Paste creates clones which means any change in one will change all of the clones and the original.

Attach your file to the thread (Export as Archive file *.f3d) for more specific help.

I am using the move and cheking copy, and it makes the clone. It is copy, not clone?

Ok, will try to find the copy new and how to use it. I just hope the copy new would be the default. I underastand copy is a copy, not a clone that inherits features from the origial

Where is the copy new? where is the tool that does not create any links to the original when making a copy?

More over, I would really like a tool that removes any existing links and all existing constraints. I did not get the above discussed selection filtering working.

To be clear, I like the Fusion 360 for most parts. As obvious I am beginer and will never be a power user, but will ocationally use it. I think the Fusion 360 has great potential to be a tool for people like me, but to sucseed it has to provide a simple and stupid moide that does not try to do too many things automatically. Currently I use so much time trying to go around the Fusion 360 links, inheritence etc. I have no problem spending some time manually modeling what I need to do. I have no problems spending time and copying somenting 5 times manually. But I have problems spending hours trying to greate a copy that has no links to anything. very frustrating.

I'd like to be able to use the Copy|Paste and Copy|Paste New options you mentioned in your post, but I don't see anywhere in the menus to select which type of paste is being used. The only option I see is just Copy (Ctrl-C) and Past (Ctrl-V). When I use those operations in a sketch, the pasted geometry does not seem to have any link to the original (I can drag around curves in one without the other updating). That is fine for some things, but there are times where it would be very helpful to have a clone of the original. How do I access the type of paste operation that would do that automatically? I know I can manually set it up by using dimensions and expressions that reference the original object's dimension parameter names, but your comment made it sound like there was a way to have this happen automatically. Thanks for your help.

The constraints set within a sketch point are (for the most part) prohibiting the moving of a sketch object. (Please excuse my ignorance if I explain things wrongly, I have very little experience witch the program).

I kept running in to the problem of not being able to move my sketch objects after I've created them. I believe that constraints kept me from doing so. I was constantly wasting so much time removing the sketch constraint points from every single point in a sketch to finally be able to move the **** thing. Finding a solution for this took me so long.

So my current process is :

  • Edit the sketch I cannot move.
  • Select > Selection Filters > enable only the "Select through" and "Sketch points" options.
  • Drag a selection box over the sketch so it selects all the points.
  • Delete.
  • Move the sketch where ever I please.

THANKS!!!
