reference a hole position to a face

Hi guys

I have struggled with this one for hours, so asking here for help.

I want to make a hole position reference such that I can define the end section of an aluminium extrusion and then press/pull the end of the extrusion to a new dimension and the hole keeps the same distance from the face all the time.  I need to make a template this way so that I can produce different lengths of extrusion, but the holes are always set from the end.  I have holes at both ends, obviously, the static end is not a problem.

I tried a hole command and moved it in the timeline to after the extrusion change but that didn't seem to work either.

You can use Move tool (instead of Press/Pull) and select both end surface and hole. Like this:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast/a982d77a-c292-43f5-a563-76f91633e3ea

However, this way Fusion does not keep track of moved value for later review/edit (I mean if you edit the Move in timeline it shows 0 mm).

Hi,

try press/pull instead of "Offset Face"

It works, but do not ask why.

You did not share your design, so it is hard to describe a solution that we know would work on your design.  But, in general, you want to do this with a parametric design flow.  The screencast below shows one way to do this.  In that design (also attached), the depth of the bracket is controlled by the extrusion depth, and the hole is based on a sketch that references the end of the extrusion with a dimension.

Thank you Hamidsh

That's a good one to know and it works, however as you say it is not tracked, but thanks for the method

Thanks Guenther.

I could not get that to work, if I select Push/Pull, when I select face it switches to Offset Face, however there were other posts that helped me get it right.

Thanks

Thanks Jeff

Yes I see, I was looking at it wrongly. I should have edited the first push/pull, which having tried it, also works in my model. I was adding an offset to the face and expecting the hole to follow it, which in retrospect I can see could never work.

Much appreciated the quick response too.

Many thanks!

Hi,

press pull produces a different result than the direct use of offset face

Hi @g-andresen

It seems to me if the sketch is fully defined Press/Pull is automatically treated as Offset Face and that does not yield what @neil.hollingworth wants. Your sketch is not fully defined so Press/Pull modifies it as can be seen from your GIF.
