Reassociate dimension issue on import to Autocad

I am getting an issue when I import DWG from F360 into Autocad.

As follows:

Create 3D model in F360

Output to DWG format (multiple sheets)

Open DWG in ACAD LT 2017

All items/sheets import no problem

But

Add dimension in ACAD (no problem)

Wait about 2-3 seconds

ACAD warning symbol and message saying 'reassociate dimension' or 'delete'

Reassociate dimension - message reappears

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Hi Jonathan,

This looks like a bug to me, I entered it into the system (internal reference: FDWG-8791).  Has this worked for you in the past?

While output of the drawing from Fusion breaks the associativity of the drawing to the design, we should be able to create associative dimensions to the drawing views when output and opened in AutoCAD/LT.  From my test here we are correctly taking the view scale into consideration (the same dimension to 1:1 and 1:2 scale views have the same value), but the dimension is badged as disassociated and won't move with the view as expected.

Are there specific features or something missing in Fusion Drawings that is prompting you to output and dimension your drawing in LT? Ideally the annotation would be done within Fusion so the drawing remains associated and will update with design changes.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for your response on this.

No, I have not experienced this in the past. This was my first attempt at this workflow.

This is the same as my experience.

Re: F360 Issues

The reason for looking into this workflow is not ideal as I would prefer to work with associated dimensions and not worry about transferring across to ACAD LT. My reasoning is below.

  • It is worth noting that I am reasonably fussy when it comes to dimensioned drawings (for fast drawings to build from the current config is fine)
  • I am creating some architectural style drawings and they need to be used for high quality presentation / marketing
  • F360 did not have the following options:
  • Control line weights between dimensions and components
  • limited control on dim arrows/end points
  • need to offset dim lines from component at varying distances
  • limited control on font height (too big generally)
  • ACAD offer numerous other dim style specifications
  • Option to include drawing blocks / for symbols and view and section titles etc.

I realise my workflow may be non-standard but I was hoping to be able to migrate drawings between the various Autodesk products.

Thanks,

Jon.

@cmiller66

Do you know if there's any long-term plans to allow associativity (sic) between the Fusion design and an exported DWG?  I see the toolset in AutoCAD when I click on the drawing views within an imported DWG (I'm trying to work in pretty much the same way as Jonathan, for the exact same reasons,) but I'm guessing it's for Inventor, or models made within AutoCAD?

Hi Jon,

Thank you for the details, it's appreciated.  I did verify that while it's not expected (from a user's perspective), the new dimension is disassociated because as far as LT is concerned, the model source is missing. Even though the drawing view looks like regular geometry, it's a separate object which knows the reference is not there.  I forwarded the request to the team (create associative dimensions to the view geometry in the output drawing even if the design source is missing).

We have better property (lineweight) control on our roadmap.  Text height can currently be set in annotation settings as well as individually edited per text object, but there is still room for improvement.  I will forward the other items (more control over dimension styles) to the team.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Hi Jake,

I'm not aware of any plans at the moment to support the link between the Fusion design and output dwg.  We have been (and are still) working on getting the functionality in Fusion Drawings up to a level so most users don't have the need to output their drawing to finish elsewhere.

To give some more background on the drawing view question, the view functionality we use in Fusion is based on AutoCAD's Model Documentation feature.  In AutoCAD this allows users to create a 2D drawing which is linked to an Inventor design (or native 3D AutoCAD design in model space) and create views of it. So yes there is a very close similarity between this and Fusion drawings.

Thanks,
Chris
