Re-Order Parameters

Is there any method to change the order of parameters?

I have many that I want to fill in to control geometry.  I forgot one and now it falls at the end of the list.  It would make more sense in my workflow it was in sequence with the others for that piece of geometry.

Can we make it a thing in 2022?

Abolutely bizarre that this isn't in there. Baffling. Would take someone a few weeks who is au fait with the codebase I should think.

I'll start a GoFundMe. How much to get this implemented?

Is there a way to Vote on features here in AutoDesk? I've seen many discussion platforms that let you Vote to measure the real interest of a desired feature, and help the designers prioritize updates.

OMG!!! Am I dreaming? This has finally been implemented, and they even added a filter box!!! This feature alone is by far the biggest workflow enhancement Autodesk has implemented in a long time. Thank you for listening to us!!!

Hello,

it would be really helpful to be able to sort the parameters. This cannot be difficult. I am sure a lot of people don't care to open a support ticket for this and live with the nuiscance, as you can still work, but it would be much tidier.

Kai.

Actually I don't think you can re-order them, you can sort them but not change the order into a specific sequence..

If you can I would be grateful for someone to show it.

I believe the only Sorting is to the Timeline order.

I was referring to shorting ascending or descending by the column headers.

Yeah, I think what is there isn't what we (or certainly I) was looking for. What I'd like, is to be able to order parameters. Simple. "Move Up", "Move Down", then I can arrange the parameters in a neat way that makes logical sense.... this isn't always the same as alphabetical or timeline order. Still baffled that this isn't a standard feature.

OK so here is a summary of the current situation:

  1. User Parameters can by sorted by any of the column headers ("Parameter", "Name", "Unit", "Expression", etc): This works exactly as expected. Clicking the "Name" column header once will sort the list in ascending alphabetical order by "Name", clicking a second time reverses the sort order.
  2. Fusion 360 forgets the user's prior sort preference: The parameter list is always sorted by timeline order when the Parameters window opens. In other words, if the last time the user opened the Parameters window the user sorted it by "Name", Fusion 360 forgets this and sorts the list by "Parameter" again. For me this is the biggest oversight/weakness with the current implementation. Usually, in more complex designs I am careful to name my User Parameters so that, when I sort alphabetically by name, related parameters appear next to each other. For example, "ShelfTop_Width", "ShelfTop_Depth" instead of "TopShelf_Width", "ShelfTop_Depth". This may not be the most language-like naming style but it makes the parameter list a lot easier to navigate. I think it would be very useful if Fusion 360 could just remember globally (i.e including for new designs) the user's sort preference. So far I have never needed to sort the parameter list by anything other than "Name", and it gets tiring having to do it every time I visit the Parameters window.
  3. To restore timeline order, click the Fx button (top-left corner). This works as expected, although I personally have not yet found a situation where it was practical or useful, but I don't want to dismiss this feature because I'm no power user and maybe there are situations where it is helpful and I just don't know. That said, based on my personal experience, I don't think this should be the default sort because it is the only sort I have never used.
  4. Parameters cannot be arranged manually. I have never needed this myself and I'd argue very few users would but, again, I won't rush to dismiss it since different users have different need. Personally, if I had to choose between manual arrange and remembering the last sort preference, I'd absolutely and definitely choose the latter.

Note about point 3: There is a small bug. When Timeline Order is active, the column headers still show the sort chevron. As you can see in the attached screenshot, the Name header has the ascending sort chevron but the list isn't sorted by Name, because Timeline Order is active. The chevron should not be displayed in this case:

In your point 4, it's ultimately the most flexible. However you want your parameters ordered, you can do it. It therefore should suit everyone's needs - indeed how could it not?

Any of the sorting methods adds the additional burden on the user of having to name their parameters in a possibly contrived way so they can sort them and achieve what could be achieved much more easily just by allowing the users to order them.

I don't think adhering to a systematic naming method isn't a burden —it is, IMO, good practice and it is something we all should do. As long as manual arrange doesn't replace the existing alphanumerical sorting features, I don't have a problem with manual arrange being added. I probably won't use it, but if other users will then I'm happy for it to be added, of course.

I agree, systematic naming is a good practice - I do it myself. Where it becomes a burder is where you _have_ to use that systematic naming to _also_ sort out your ordering, to the point where it can become cumbersome.

But systematic naming does not fix anything. I added a number of parameters
for one feature, went on to the next features and then realized I forgot
one of parameters for the first feature. All I want to either move the
parameter up or via a sorting mechanism make it move up.

I understand that there is an internal sequence, which cannot. be
disturbed. But there should be a display sequence as well. Like sorting the
stations on a TV differently, than the frequency sequence.

Kai.
