(Re)Naming linked components

I'm new to 360 and likely have a broken workflow, but what I'm trying to do is model components (e.g.: "RU42 slew bearing") in one design, then pull all the individual components into a separate design to assemble all the parts.

This works ok, but when I link a component into a design, it brings its name with it so I am unable to give the linked component a unique name. For example, I would like to pull in three RU42 slew bearings and name them "Left rocker bogie slew", "Right rocker bogie slew" and "Stabilizer slew" respectively, but instead, I just have three "RU42 slew bearing" components in my design.

Is there a way I can change my flow to achieve what I'm trying to do?

Thanks in advance!

One big question, do you want the inserted linked components to still be linked to the original after the renaming?  In other words, if you make a change to the original component, that you linked and renamed into an assembly, do you want the component, in the new assembly to update?

I will assume you want to maintain the ability of the inserted component to update if the original changes.  The only answer I can see is to use Insert Derive (component) command to add your external files to the top level assembly and be able to both rename them and have them linked to the original.

Thank you John!

I didn't realize there was more than one way to link designs.

Much appreciated.
