Problems organizing inserted components

I'm trying to organize a design that has inserted components and sub-assemblies.  When I try to drag the inserted compnents to the sub-assy that I want to use, it doesn't move.  What are the rules to moving inserted components?  Is there something I'm missing?

Yep, 

In this file, you can’t modify a linked component, or sub assembly.

Adding a new file to the linked subassembly is modifying it.  

You need a plan B.

Open the external sub-assembly directly.  Add your external components to it as desired, save, close and return to top level assembly and accept the pending Update.  Since you already inserted some external components into the top level, you may have to Remove them, and follow the process above.  In doing this you may lose some assembly Joints that have to be replaced.
