Prismatic Conversion Option

Hello. I have an STL file that I'd like to modify and did import it into Fusion (I have the community free version). I did convert it to a mesh and started to modify it, however it has a great deal of triangles and selecting the correct surface to draw a sketch has been very difficult. Would anyone here with a license to do a prismatic conversion kindly please do this for me? I can then modify it. I tried to recreate this from scratch (sketches) and then using the revolve feature, but I'm not getting the same object/shape. Thank you.

The threads might not be correct. They were definitely  not correct in the original.

@TheCADWhisperer Thank you very much for the assistance. I’ve deleted my initial attempts and will try again, as I know that’s the best way to learn. I’ll follow up on this post with my updated design for any guidance you can offer. Thanks again for your time and help.

@TheCADWhisperer Thank you very much for the video and detailed explanation. I wasn’t aware of the “Create Mesh Section Sketch” feature, and it was incredibly helpful for getting started. Your approach to creating the top and side profiles with a circle and trimming techniques was also very clear. I followed your steps and was able to reproduce the result exactly and make my modifications.

 

I do have one final question to ensure I’m understanding the workflow correctly. When I import my STL, I’m doing so through Mesh → Create → Insert Mesh. My imported mesh appears solid and yellow, whereas yours shows the blue triangular faces. I did not use “Convert Mesh” (faceted) or “Combine Face Groups.” Are those steps unnecessary in this case since we’re only using the mesh to generate the section sketche rather than converting the entire mesh into a body?

With the free license you would still have a mostly faceted body (I can show a trick to remove some of the facets) so there is really no point in converting the mesh to a solid if the geometry is easy to reverse engineer.

Thank you @g-andresen. Using the "Fit Curve to Mesh Section" is also very useful and things I forget fusion can do. Both of these videos have been extremely helpful in learning how to recreate a simple mesh into a sketch I can turn into a body.
