PDF User Manual for Fusion 360 [Ultimate]

Is there, or could I suggest, a PDF User Manual for Fusion360. The easiest way to learn is to have a printed document by ones side, so that you can read and type at the same time. The video instructions provided are first class but it can be very distracting if you are flitting between the two continuously and makes for slow progress.

Thank You.

Thanks for this help. I was relying on what I have been told, that Autodesk has provided searchable text based documentation. Thanks for the tip that 'doing a little digging" is all that is needed. As always I am willing to learn more about how to do searches. What terms did you use in your search? Must the outline be expanded manually to expose the information within the documentation to be searched?

And I am still searching for the text based document on the topic of Rigid Groups. So far all that I am finding is a video.

Click on the provided link.  My prior knowledge knew that Rigid Group (is / was Design) in the Assembly / Assemble Menu, so expanded each arrow to drill down to it.

Click on the provided link, and search field gives 1638 results, the page I was at is 2nd topic listed.

Can someone please help.

I had posted in #142 and #148. before as well.   I did get a reply sending me back to these posts but that was not very helpful.  Even though I am signed in I can't access any the link to the zip files or myhub files.   I think some of these starter files are all available on the Data Panel --> Basic Training (not "Fusion 101" stated in the tutorials ) but the completed samples are not.

Those files are way out of data, use what is here

https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/learn-support?_ga=2.68081688.887681532.1611628004-11910...

Also, they should not be giving the files over just the drawing but that stuff is out of date.

Thanks for the written details concerning the Autodesk application “Fusion 360”. As a teaching of engineering for high school students, I needed to incorporate a CAD application that could assist students in elevating their interest in engineering as a career choice. I found it from a recommendation from a doctoral student attending MIT In Cambridge, Massachusetts. Your documental reduces the anxiety of these young student on using professional software.

I am amused that this topic has never really been solved in spite of Autodesk's insistence that it was.

The support documentation that Autodesk provides is too heavily reliant on videos that are inserted into the documentation. And nothing has changed about the lackluster indexing and poor searchability of video documentation. Videos are linear and they are a profound time-sink. Much time is wasted scrubbing through a video for a fact that Autodesk has failed to write out in words, or to index.

Also, if someone at Autodesk were ever to try to digest the underlying meaning of a tool or idea used in the Fusion 360 program, they just might realize how written communications work. The written form uses clearly understood language that carries meaning and can stand the scrutiny of proofreading. Viewing mouse movements on a screen does none of that.

I believe the issue is that Autodesk is firm in their conviction that reliance on linear video lessons or instructional videos serves their larger audience at the expense of the smaller group who prefer precisely formed and easily editable written descriptions.

Autodesk is missing an opportunity.

A good textbook is comprised of a table of contents, chapters organized around basic principles and set in order that progresses through from beginning to end. And finally, a textbook has an index that is hand crafted by a human and not left to be created on the fly by a keyword search engine. And a dictionary of terms is very often a regularly used part of many good textbooks.

A useful alternative to what is currently available would be a Wiki that can accept constant refinement and updates from the users. A Wiki is also expandable, accepting new entries. Videos and screencasts are never refined or updated as the product evolves. You cannot add to a video, nor delete errors from a video.

My reference was primarily to product documentation, where videos and screencasts are rarely (if ever) encountered.

There is nothing stopping you from doing your own version of a fusion book they give you a heads up when something is going to be updated.

@g-andresen  I follow this link https://help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/?guid=GUID-1C665B4D-7BF7-4FDF-98B0-AA7EE12B5AC2  to arrive at 'Product Documentation' and you may be right. But if you look at this particular URL where it clearly says at the top of the page: DOCUMENTATION, you will notice that on this page there are two videos. The first video is not instructive, but promotional in nature.

Product Documentation.png

This page has two additional videos  https://help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/?guid=GUID-E647CA56-7187-406A-ACE4-EAC59914FAE4

And you are right that things settle down to mostly text and screenshots (images). I suppose I tuned it out thinking that after two pages with videos which said very little, I would not have expected things to improve. My expectations were set too low by my first experience.

And yet when we do a search of the Autodesk site for answers to questions, the vast majority of responses are automated search engine links to keywords, not to any comprehensive documentation on the subject.

Perhaps the issue is one of Autodesk's overuse of the search engine rather than a carefully prepared index to the documentation.

You pose and interesting idea. I had not considered my experience to be of the level that would be capable of authoring a useful document.

Have you written such a document? You make it sound rather attractive. I'll bet that you would be just the right person to do it.

@g-andresen

I now remember how I arrived at my conviction on this topic. I thought that the term 'Assemblies' would be a good place to start reading and I arrived at this URL: https://help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/?query=assemblies

While scanning the first three pages of this topic which covers the first 45 of the total of 3370 entries, 23 of the first 45 entries are videos.

That left a strong impression. More than 50% of the first three pages was 'Self-Paced Learning.

That experience was unforgettable.
