Patch tool is not producing an object and does not give me any errors

Hi,

I am trying to model a boat and I have done most of the surfaces but there is one surface that for some reason the stitching function is not recognizing as it was a close surface.  I have verified several times that the two curves are touching but still it won't create an object.  Could someone give me some hints on what to do or how to verify or figure where could the curves be open.  See picture below.

Patch requires a loop of edges.  You have not got a loop so far.

Zoom in to the bodies at browser side of that pic, you have two construction lines and the blue selections have an overlap.

If Loft can make the surface, it will confirm the overlap.

That said, without the file, it’s just opinion.

Might help….

Please attach your model.  If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it. If needed, ZIP a F3Z file.

Hi John,

Thank you for your msg, I was able to fix that issue, as you said it was a disconnected line but it was very difficult to find even as I zoomed in.  However, I am having a different issue now the patch won't create the surface as it gives an error.  See error below and the file is also attached.  Any help will be very appreciated, is my first time designing boats so it has been a challenge.

Sorry I do not think my reply was sent correctly.  I was able to solve that issue, there was a disconnected line as you pointed out but it was very difficult to find even as I zoomed in.  So I ended up adding a line crossing one of the curves, then using the cut tool and then reattaching the with a new spline.  I now have another error that the curve cannot be created.  Not sure what I should change.  attached is the error and the fusion file.

Thank you

That isn't going to work!

Create the entire surface without the cutout.

Then, trim away the cutout.

4-sided surfaces should be lofted, not patched. You have been fortunate with the patch tool so far, but you are using it in many places where a loft is a more appropriate tool.

Thank you for the help, that worked out.  I was trying to use the loft tool but it does not recognize any of the areas that are created in the different spaces.  Unless I create those shapes in a plane then it does not work.  The top hull of the boat is not straight so that is my main problem and why I was using the patch and stitch tools.  If there is a better way, I am all for it, because this way is not my preferred so far.

If you use Coincident Constraints - you don't even have to zoom in - you force the absolute connection.

I noticed that your first sketch is not even constrained to the origin.

You are building a leaky boat on a foundation of quicksand.

Is this line supposed to be Horizontal?

If yes, then why does it not have a Horizontal Constraint?

Hi,

I am using a canvas to sketch the boat shape from, so getting the canvas exactly horizontal is kind of complicated. As long as I am aligned with the canvas seems to be working out.

Thank you for your help and yes it is a leaky boat so far 🙂

@joseosanchez

The fact that you are using a canvas image is irrelevant as far as utilizing Geometry Constraints in a sketch.
