Patch Environment Design Help - Guitar Neck

Hello Out there,

I've been working in the Sculpt environment on a guitar neck but ran into some issues and am now trying to design it in the  Patch environment. I'm actually hoping that I can get some of it done in Patch and then switch to Sculpt for the finishing touch's. I've been able to create the surface bodies for most of the neck and headstock but there is an area where they join that needs to transition smoothly and I don't know if it can be done in Patch. The area is on the underside of the neck where the headstock and neck meet (it's called a volute). How should I move forward from here? I've attached my file.

Fusion the ability to do a curve network too and thank to a little persistant German whos name shall not be named

Fusion also offers G1 G2 for the rail boundary edges.

The only thing where Rhino logically is better at is the free form sketching since Fusion follows the typical 2D sketch.

But then adjusting a one curve in Rhino will often result into the rest needing to be hand adjusted to.

@cekuhnen yes i know but still strugling with it in Fusion. I'm not using Rhino because it's better at this, it's just that i have been doing it for ages in Rhino and am more of a free form sketcher than a sketchplane modeler. Transforming my workflow to the Fusion way takes a lot of time still for me so i'm only slowly progressing and when i can't figure sth out in Fusion i do it quickly in Rhino where i know how it works and import in Fusion as STP or tspline.

GENERAL DISCLAIMER: if there isn't a file attached to my posts then there is a reason for it. wherever i can i will attach a file for troubleshooting. If no file is attached i will always try to explain as clearly as possible with illustrative screenshots. when i have an issue that can only be helped by attaching a file which i cannot share publicly i won't ask about it here.

Thank you very kindly Phil for the screencast. Now I know why those t-spline lines were darker and will keep that in mind.

Best Regards.

Hello and glad to have you join the conversation.  Since I've only really ever been exposed to Fusion that's all I know and like yourself and many others, will use what we're familiar with for the sake of time and sometimes our sanity. It could be debated forever which program works better but at the end of the day it's whatever floats your boat. One thing I've learned, there are different ways to achieve the result, we just all get there in different ways. Fusion seems to provide different options and it's up to the individual to figure what works best for themselves. Hope you keep tuning in.

Thanks.

Hello Again Guys,

Got the wrinkles ironed out finally and I think the neck is looking pretty good. I'm having a small issue on the backside of the neck at the headstock that I can't seem to resolve. There is a portion of one t-spline that's a little wonky just where the curvature starts that I can't seem to fix. The t-splines are pretty symmetrical everywhere else except this one spot. Could there be something that's preventing me from being able to fix this spot? I've attached a screenshot as well as the file.

Thanks.

Hello All, finally managed to figure out what was causing me some problems and finish off my neck. I think it looks pretty good and is ready for the next step, creating the toolpaths required to machine this puppy on the CNC. I know I'm bound to run into some problems at the CAM process (I always do) and hope you'll help me out when needed. Any comments or suggestions you may have about what I've got so far will be greatly appreciated. Attached is the file for your review.

Thanks Everyone.

Well, I guess it would help if the file was attached. Doh!

@cekuhnen, Sorry for reviving a 3.5 year old thread,  but the google drive links aren't working (for me anyway), any chance of reposting the various videos and screencasts?

Thanks

@matthewrjacobs  Oh no those are gone with the wind since a long time.

But since that time also Fusion360 finally added some tools that were drastically needed too.

However if you want we could meet via zoom and you show me your issue.

I spent a few years working on guitar necks. The tools when I started were really problematic. I am really pleased with how most of it works now. If you start a new thread on guitar neck design please tag me and I will share what I can.

I have a few necks in production now.

Hi There,

I see you responded to my original post. The folks here were incredibly helpful to me, more than I can thank them for. It was a tough go as I had never used any kind of CAD program before. I just recently started using Fusion again and am working on several guitar projects. This time I was able to model up my necks in the parametric environment instead of Sculpt/Form environment. Not any easier, just different.

Thanks.

Thanks for the offer Class. I still have some modeling left to do, and I'm not at my wits end, yet! Seems like at least 4 people are interested in this topic so I'll probably start a new thread if need be.
