Parts move around when modifying assembly

I've always seemed to have issues when drawing parametric drawings using inventor and 360 when I modify something at the beginning of the drawing and it throws off my whole drawing.  This assembly was fine till I changed the width of the side pieces then everything moved, it seems as it loses it reference to original objects.  Now I can't figure out how to fix it.  I've tried redefining the sketch plane and moving the objects but I can't get some of them back.  If you highlight the first sketch in each part you can see the reference sketch plane and aren't even close.  The base part is grounded so not sure how this is happening.

Grounding the compone is only the first step to a successful assembly. Then you need to use the joints in the Assembly menu to properly locate components. Don't use the position capture feature to do so, it'll get you into trouble.

Thanks, any tips for fixing it? Do I need to go and apply joints to fix it.  Seems like I tried that and it didn't fix it.

I have no idea what you tried. The file you shared did not include any joints, so I cannot comment on it.

try again and share the file again. Preferably without a password.

It might be a good idea to go through one of the tutorial courses in the Learn & Support section of this forum.

I didn't create any joints, I just select faces to create the sketches and project geometry as needed.  So you saying it requires I joint to create an assembly.  I when you select a face for a sketch and project geometry it is supposed to retain that reference.  I didn't know assembly joints were required to create assemblies, thought they were used more for animation etc...

You assumed. That's why I referred to the introductory tutorials in the Learn & Support section.

In fact the animation system does not even honor the joints.
