Orbit and pan keyboard shortcuts?

Anonymous

I'm transitioning from OnShape where a right click was always mapped to orbit and a pan was a contr-rmb. While the expanded toolset of fusion360 is great so far I'm finding the basic navigation controls completely maddening. I simply don't have a middle mouse button and don't ever intend to (using a magic mouse). Why isn't there at least a simple keyboard modifier + right click option to trigger orbit and pan? Having to click it manually each time and then hit escape to switch it off is severely hampering my efficiency. Is there any way short of buying a 3 button mouse (not happening) to make basic navigation usable?

Now approved in Apple App Store...

Wow this feels so much better.  Just some quick tips I discovered with this new setting: "Tinkercad"

Right click = a context menu that allows you to set the orbit center

right click + hold = orbit

middle click = pan

shift + right click = context menu

shift + middle click = set the orbit point first

shift + middle click held down = orbit

I find that shift+middle click to quickly adjust the orbit center point, then a right click hold to orbit is the fastest way to do both if you must without using the context menu.

Better, definitely better.

On my Mac, with my Magic Mouse, if I set the Pan, Zoom, Orbit shortcuts to Tinkercad, then I can press and hold the right-mouse button to orbit, or hold the Control key plus left-mouse, it orbits as well.

Very cool.

Can't pan, don't have a middle mouse button. But that's not the end of the world, can always click on the pan button on the toolbar.

Thanks AutoDesk. 🙂

Yeah that is better. Although, if they did it the way that was already suggested, you could do both pan and orbit.

If you are on a Mac, you don't need to get a 3 button mouse; installing Magic Prefs turns your Magic mouse into a 3 button mouse, allowing you to pan.

I checked out Magic Prefs, and it is no longer support, and may not work on the latest OS.

Ah.. really? That's just too bad. I'm using it right now on OS Sierra 10.12.6, but yeah my mac is old.

You would think that this would be discoverable via the User interface. As it is, I have wasted many hours over several months looking for a solution that every cad program I have ever used has made easy.

At the expense of loosing functionality like volume control (without using both hands).

No THANKS.

Yes, but a simple operation like panning takes three hands. One for the mouse, one for the function key, and one for the fn key.

I guess this is the kind of dogwood that PC people have been eating for not long they don't now how lame it is.

I find using the middle mouse button for ANYTHING incredibly annoying, as it is too hard to push, and is physically wearing a bloody hole through my finger.

To pan with Alt-RightMouse:    add these lines to your autoHotkey file  (I'm using the tinkercad preference.  MAC users are SOL).

Actually buying another mouse to make some software work is the last thing I would do. Especially since the software is designed to work on a particular computer that has a standard mouse. Why should every single mac user have to buy another mouse? Not a fix.

Don't know if this is related. I was having trouble getting the track pad zoom gesture (two fingers spreading apart) to zoom in the vertical axis of my lap top screen. The project would widen and shrink in the horizontal, but I'd have to pan, or use the zoom window function to both zoom & position on the screen. The project was absolutely locked on some horizontal line during zoom. This was a new (mis-)behavior that started last fall, but I didn't report it because it was possible it was 'pilot error.' Because over the summer, I could do the spread two finger gesture, and the project would zoom in or out as I expected. But I noticed tonight that on the external monitor, that I can use the track pad two finger zoom as I would expect. I'm kinda addicted to the huge display real estate, so I'll have to try again on the mac book's display only some other time. Just curious if there was a recent update to navigation.

This is actually a cool little app. Thanks for the link.

With the latest version of Fusion 360, set to Tinkercad, I can Orbit with my right mouse button, and pan by holding fingers on the right mouse and middle mouse spots on my magic mouse. I'm sure this will quickly become intuitive.

Thanks everyone for the info and tips.

I do also have my Logitech mouse on hand, and will be going back and forth, trying them both out.

Regarding the debate about buying a new mouse just to use with Fusion 360 if the Magic Mouse doesn't work, I would interject this. It's not about being snobbish and only wanting to use a magic mouse. It's a nice mouse, don't get me wrong. And there are equally nice mice on the market not made by Apple (no, don't slap me with a wet fish for saying that). But, the point I made last year, is that there are lots of free and cheap software on the market to do 3D modelling, and many have very intuitive pan/orbit features that work perfectly well with a Magic Mouse. If a particular application isn't going to meet a consumer's needs, then they are simply going to go elsewhere.

This isn't about buying additional hardware so one can conform to the demands of the software. This is about the software company being aware of what their users require if they want to keep those users as customers.

And, I want to say, thank you AutoDesk, muchly improved.

Hi Pdev, I wonder why your contributions is not rated. I myself refuse to destroy a good finger by clicking on the mid-wheel in order to pan.

Actually TinkerCAD® allows Shift+R_Button for Pan function. So why could not Fusion-360® allow it as well, that is, Alt+R_Click as you suggest (or even SpcBar+R_Click)

So I enjoy the idea to download, install and learn AutoHotKey, and finally build this shortcut in one year approx 😄

How can you say it "rewards flexibility" when that is ALL we are asking for. It most certainly does NOT reward flexibility!

I have grown very accustomed to a gesture enabled trackpad and find it MORE flexible that any mouse will ever be. I want the flexibility to map those keys to my left hand very similarly to what I've always used in Photoshop and Illustrator. Forcing me to press two keys rather than allowing me to select a modifier (or even the spacebar) key is about as rigid and inflexible as I can imagine! Even if I had function keys they are FAR from the rest position for my left hand. That much hand movement is very fatiguing over a few hours.
I don't ever intend to buy a three button mouse either. I left those behind 25 years ago. I want a modern user input device and I hope Fusion will get around to allowing me to use the device I prefer.

I'm on a MacBook Pro, using only the trackpad. I find that the following very intuitive actions work:
• Pan: 2-finger scroll in any direction (slide two fingers on the trackpad).

• Orbit: Hold shift key down while 2-finger scrolling.

• Zoom: pinch in or out.

• jump to Home view: 2-finger double tap

• I'd like to find a Zoom to Fit (window fit) gesture, besides F6, but I haven't found one yet. Anyone know it for trackpad?
