Opacity control in render

Is opacity control supposed to not work in the rendering environment? It sure would be nice if it did.
For example if you want to render a closeup on a component with a component covering it partially visible without needing to go in and change the material properties.

No, the opacirty control in the model space viewport is really an aid to modeling or for quick visualization.

Fusion 360 uses a physically based rendering approach and if you want transparency you need to select a transparent material e.g.glas, acrylic plastic ets.

Don't you think it would be just as useful in the rendering environement though?

You can achieve a simlar effect but much better looking IMHO with using  for example the "Glass - Light Color" from the material list.

Drag it to your object and then right-click on thhe materila icon and select duplicate. Then right-click on the duplicate and select edit.

This will allow you to edit the absorption distance. More distance means more transparent and vice versa.

Rename the material to what you like and save to your favorites for re-use in the next project.

BTW, here's another little hint. But small radii on all your visble edges. That will make any rendering look so much better than these unnatural sharp edges.

I am also not having luck trying to create a similar efect in rendering. Either the part is too refractive distorting the component below or the component above is not clearly visible and just looks like a shadow.

You must have posted right before me. I was playing with various glass and I just tried the one you suggested and it has the same issue it distorts the image behind it but if you use a refractive index of 1 it just looks like a weird shadow. Any other number and it's distorted.

In that case, you can change the refractive index closer to 1.

Yeah but it looks like crap at 1 and anything other than 1 distorts the view.

Best Regards.
