New from File always rotates result 90° in Y-axis

Every time I create a new design from a file (like a .stp file), the new model is imported rotated 90° around the Y-axis. It's tedious to rotate this result, especially if it's a complex model.

I don't know if this is because other CAD software uses Y as the up-axis, or what. But perhaps there should be an option to rotate on import.

Thanks!

I don't have problems with this so I'd say it's the other CAD system. The problem with an option to rotate on import is you will not now until you open the file, or do you want something like the move function every time you import so you can rotate to the correct orientation? I'd find that tedious as all my files are Z upSmiley Very Happy

Strange. I've never had the import (New from File) work correctly. My flow had been to import, then select all the components by clicking on them in the browser, and then rotate them all with the Move command, but sometimes this doesn't work. With the most recent file, one component didn't rotate, and when I try to move it explicitely, it pops up a message saying "Root component cannot be moved."

This is the file I tried to import: PP4StepFile.zip

It's puzzling to me that there's no reliable way to rotate and move everything in the model.

And I still haven't figured out how to then move the entire assembly (or collection of objects) such that some point is at the origin.

Fusion seems to have a problem with some imported models, it seems like it has the original position of the part and the place it's moved to in the assembly confused. Here's an example where I unstitched a part then run stitch, as you can see the edge curves are displayed in a different place.

Stitch command.

I've got another thread where I've reported this problem, I'll add a link to this thread. I think this is why you are having the problem where some parts rotate the wrong way.

Thanks.

I had the same problem (model initially rotated) from a file I got from Orange Vise, too (which I suspect came from SolidWorks).

I've figured out a way to rotate the assembly. Use the move tool and make sure the object type is set to Components, select one subassembly component at a time and rotate 90°. The UpLookingCamera takes a while to compute. You might be able to select the whole assembly and do it in one go but I found it was taking for every and had to shut Fusion down.

Here's a screencast of the procedure, I've attached the file as well.
