I am still a student at Fusion 360.  Wondering how a Ribbon is drawn in 3D.  I have attached an image file of a sample Ribbon.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

What have you tried so far? What is your experience level?

Have you had a look at using some construction planes, a couple of 3D sketches and the sweep feature?

Hello!

Yes I have done that.  Have tried sculpting too.  Searching for video tutorials for help or indicative method continues.

Thank you.

Best regards/William.

Hi

Have used multiple contruction planes along path and angled the rectangle sketches along the way to give the twist to the ribbon.  Time consuming and tedious.  Wondering if there is a more efficient way about it.

Thank you for asking.

Hi William, I made a quick sreencast of sweeping a rectangle along a 3D curve to create a ribbon. If the timeline is on, you can move around spline points to alter the shape of the ribbon.

If you want control over twist the ribbon then that would be more involved.

Hi Don,

Thank you very much.  Yes I did use the sweep method like you did. However I have difficult get the angle of the ribbon at certain point of the lenght of the path.  I know this can be done by having multiple contruction planes along the path and doing a loft.  Wonder if there is any other way.

Thank you again.

HI Don,

Thank you very much.  That's an interesting way of going about.

Just an observation.  When the angle of the rectangle is change I wonder whether the distances along the splint closest to the rectangle changes as well; mostly likely narrower.  That would not happen to ribbon in its natural state.  Can the distance between each splint be constrained?

Don, Thank you so much for going out all the way.  I am really grateful.

Best regards/William

Hi William, I was intriged with this and tried a number of things, but I find the method in this sreencast to be one of the best.

1/ make the rectangle ( make it long enough at the start )

2/ make the retangle into a patch in 'patch' space

3/ back in 'model' space use the 'edit face' command. Shape the ribbon. (You have to be out of the timeline to access this command)

4/ use the thicken command and fillet.

Hi Don,

Thank you again.

Strangely I was not able to create the patch with length and width surface.  I don't see the edit face command.  Wonder if it got to do with the version I have.

In place of the said command I was able the same surface using the plane from the sculpture mode which allow me to have the desired length and width surface.

Thank you Don.  You have been very helpful.  I am sure many out there will be learning from these.

Best regards/William - Singapore
