Navigation on Mac really needs some attention..

It seems such a fundamental thing to have navigation sorted out, but not a single 3D app I have tried lets me configure navigation in any way. As a developer and 3D enthusiast coming from Blender 3D, I just can't get my head oround why huge apps like this don't let me configure how I want to zoom, pan and orbit the viewport?!

Since you apparently have no support for the magic mouse (which works absolutely brilliantly i Blender by the way) and the viewport suffers from horrible lag when using the trackpad, I was forced to dust of the old Logitech classic with a scroll wheel thinking: "Well, at least this will work..". But no, when pressing down the scroll wheel button to pan, the viewpost continously zooms out centering on the cursor, even while panning. However, when I press SHIFT + SWB to orbit, the zooming doesn't occur. Logitech, back in the drawer you go.

So, on the mac app store version of 360, I can only use a trackpad which makes my iMac with 16GB ram and a monster graphics card feel like, well, like it's 1999 again, but without the upcoming party.

If you were to add anything regarding navigation in an upcoming release, please let it be a few options for configuring how navigate the viewport. It really makes all the difference when switching between apps or migrating from other 3D packages. I've only used 360 trial for a couple of hours and love everything about it, except the most basic part featured in every 3D package. Too bad.

I've now tested 360 on my Macbook Air, and it feels like the viewport gets about the same frame rate as on my iMac (!), which is both good and bad I guess. Even though my previous post might have seemed a bit harsh; NOT using a 3-button mouse takes away so much performance from 360, it seems wrong not to prioritize improvement in this area for Mac users.

I've been looking for the right modeling app for a couple of months now and 360 is by far the most compelling choice. The modeling is just as intuitive as 123D, but infinitely more powerful. I'll be buying a couple of different peripherals to try out and hope the navigation issue fades away, but it doesn't take away the fact of how many mac users have Magic Mice or Trackpads and expect the same performance in the viewport. I don't know how Blender does it, but it is open source, so..

And now I realized why the continuous zoom occurs. The mice I have tried all have side scrolling for the scroll wheel as well and whenever I press down on the scroll wheel, the mouse also receives a side scroll (in either direction), which causes the zoom (in or out).

I am not sure I agree with all of you assessments but I fully support that I would like to be able to configure viewport navigation and user configurable sets of keyboard shortcuts.
I have worked with Blender for about 12 years now and the navigation and an the most commonly used keyboard shortcuts have been memorized. It is particularly difficult to work with both apps concurrently when viewport navigation works exactly the opposite way.
Something that works very well in Fusion 360 but still absolutely stinks in Blender is the 3Dconnexion space mouse/ navigator devices.

Please track down the appropriate posts in the Idea Station vote on them and perhaps add comments with your specific ideas. That's where these requests help most and the Autodesk folks have a great track record of listening to their users.

We all get frustrated every now and then. However, keeping posts concise and to the point usualy pormotes quicker problem resolution.

As such perhaps a detailled description of what the expected behavior is that you are looking for and then what in the observed behavior is not meeting these expectation serves better than emotional drivel 😉

Point taken. I won't bother to post again.

I recommend using Karabiner for Mac which lets you configure mouse and keyboard on a system wide level and override app shortcuts. I created one configuration for my laptop (FN + Mouse = Middle Mouse) and one for my iMac (Shift + Right Mouse = Middle Mouse). Works quite well actually, even though my original complaint still stands; input configuration is so easy to implement, I'm astonished it hasn't been.

I am trying out fusion 360 on a mac pro. I 'm using a cintiq 27" and logitech optical mouse to navigate. My first issue is I can't take the basic navigation of zoom, pan, orbit and configure them into the cintiq remote. The second issue is the middle mouse button seems to only zoom. The whole Pan with the middle mouse or shift+middle mouse button to orbit is not working on the logitech mouse. I have no option to reconfigure the keyboard shortcuts to get around this issue.

With 28 days left to decide if I should invest further time in learning this piece of software and/or purchasing a subscription. All signs are pointing toward no, If I can't even navigate in 3D space with my existing input options.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

We all work with other applications, though what they are and how they navigate can vary a lot. Having to be aware of different methods of navigation when you switch applications is a constant “oops” waiting to happen. User configurability can be a huge help.

I’ll also put in a plug for the basic 3D Connexion Space Navigator as a Mac solution. The only bad thing is that I would be lost without it.

I wish I remember what I did, because sure as green grass an update (or an upgrade of my computer) will come along and I'll have to go through it again. But I've got smooth navigation now. Might have involved using a third-party tool to remap a middle mouse button or something, or might just be the right combination of Fusion 360 settings and the latest Fusion 360 version...
