Moving components into another component is not working

Hey all, I've searched the forum and found a few answers to this problem but none of them fix what is going on with my design.

I'm deep into an assembly and I've decided that I want to move some components into a sub-assembly, but I can't get them to move at all. When I drag them in the browser, nothing happens. No grey line, no highlight, nothing.

I am at the end of the timeline (one answer I saw)

All the sketches used for each component are a part of that component.

One other post I saw had a small bit about somehow breaking references being an issue, but I don't understand how this would be an issue at the end of the timeline. Also, if it is something like this, how can I determine what the issue is so I can fix it? The behavior of the browser simply not doing anything makes it difficult to diagnose.

Thanks for any info

A screencast of was you are trying to do would probably be helpful.

If you can, please share your design.

Here's a quick screencast. I'd rather not share the file if possible.

Thanks for the help

This is hard to evaluate without having access to the model and after all, there might be nothing wrong with it and it's just a limitation. If you are willing to share it with an AD employee than maybe @James.Youmatz can help.

Hi @TrippyLighting,

Thanks for the tag.

@Anonymous - this usually is al limitation based on the computations of the timeline. It cannot break dependencies by reordering. If you want to try this workflow, you can disable the timeline, and then you should be able to reorder more freely. To do this, right-click the top-level component in your browser tree and select Do Not Capture Design History.

Thanks James for the info. Do you happen to be able to give me an idea of what operations will create these dependencies that will then forever prevent re-ordering in the browser? IIRC when I've done this before it creates a cut/paste event in the timeline, but maybe this behavior is now different?

Deleting the design history is a no-go for me at this point in the design so I will just have to put up with not reordering for now I suppose.

On a side note @TrippyLighting, while I completely understand the desire for people to be able to explore my design file for what is breaking something and fix my particular problem, it would be really nice if someone could possibly provide a list of actions that create these unbreakable dependencies so that others who are having this issue may be able to find this thread and diagnose their own problem without posting. Just for my own reference so I can change how I design it would be super helpful as well.

Thanks everyone

Agree sometimes I can move components into other components sometimes I can. Would be good to know what it is.

Make sure you timeline marker is moved all the way to the end of the timeline before attempting to re-structure an assembly. This is the most common reason it does not work, but out does not address every situation.

Thanks that worked a charm, sorry I did not read the full thread properly. I was skim reading. Ok understood. I thought I was at end of timeline, but then I noticed there was a stray move object that I had rewinded and forgotten to delete.

Hi,

I had the same problem and i discovered that there was (due to changes on body) timeline "red errors" on rigidgroup and filet. Just deleting these 2 steps resolved the issue for me.

Yeah, moving the pointer to the end fixed it for me. Learning the little stuff now, but loving Fusion so far.

Thanks,

Dan

Thanks, moving the timeline marker to the end fixed it for me too.

Litte note for the noobs like myself: the timeline only displays actions/changes of the currently active component. (depending on settings), so it's a good idea to set the top most component as active before moving the marker, otherwise you might don't see every element in the timeline and therefore can't move to the very end!

I had a lot of operations, and when i disable the timeline, i was able to drag component from one to another, but i wanted to preserve my history. So, what i did: i grouped all the operations in the timeline into groups and after hidding operations in groups, i was able to drag components from one to another.

One of a thousand examples in Fusion 360 of an application that's coded with little thought to the user experience. Since the logic has clearly identified a blocking condition to moving a component, simply message the user with those conditions rather than put the burden on the user to learn every random scenario that can prevent the action. If only PMs at Autodesk would listen.....

rigid groups, even if are later in the tree... lock the components from being moved between components

..and then click again in same place "Capture Design History" and "ungroup" on timeline.
