Move/Copy Bug

Hi,

I updated fusion 360 today, but when i use move/copy and Create copy check mark fusion 360 crash.

Also i when i try to move object from point to point it does not show any points like in previous version. do you have to manually create a sketch and place a point?

if its a square object only corners can be selected, not the mid point of a face on the object. earlier we could select even a edge of an object  and move /Snap it towards another edge on a different body. Now i cant seem to do it.

please help me ..i don't know if i am doing it the right way

thanks

Shanaka

Hi @Anonymous,

From what I can tell from the screenshots, I think this is hitting a known issue related to Create Copy. It's not possible to Create Copy of a component while it is active (since this will effectively try to insert the component into itself). The crash will be fixed in an upcoming update. For now, if you want to Create Copy of a component, first make sure that you activate the component that you want the copy to be inserted into. This should avoid the crash, and give the expected behavior.

If you don't think this is related to Create Copy, let us know and we can definitely look into this further.

Hope this helps,

Jake

Of course that makes perfect sense.  Let me try that solution.

Thanks sop much

Wondering if this was ever fixed (Move/Copy)? I imported a component (https://gallery.autodesk.com/fusion360/projects/102488/raspberry-pi-3---b), when I try to move it Fusion just locks up. I need to force Quit.

No it's a different bug. When moving an assembly like a circuit board, with dozens or hundreds of components, you will find very long delays. It's not crashing, but seems like it after you've waited for a while. This is known and we are looking for a fix.

The recommended workaround for circuit boards like yours is to copy all the bodies to the root bodies folder and delete all the components.

Steps:

1. Turn on Body Priority filter, under Select.

2. Window select the whole circuit board.

3. Right click > copy

4. Go to browser, top node, right click, paste (it may say paste new)

5. Select all the components below the bodies folder in the browser, then delete.

You should be able to move the circuit board assembly after that. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

I am not clear on step 4, go to Browser?

Also, do I first import component to my sketch?

Try this video, it shows the steps, plus a little more to help.

In the video, first I simplify the circuit board. I don't care about all the parts smaller than 5mm. Initially some of the parts were <1mm which is too small to care about in my mechanical design.

After finding and removing the small parts, I do the steps listed above.

The "browser" I mention is the model browser, found on the left side of the modeling environment. It's where all the bodies and components are stored, and also where you copy and paste things like bodies and components.

Please let me know if you have more questions.

Thanks,

Is your circuit board a linked file in your design?

There is a link on the component, does that make it a link?

I am new to this sorry

Yes, that means you inserted it into another file, and now it's linked, which means it's read only unless you open the source file, the one you inserted (the circuit board).

You might want to undo the action of copying all the bodies, or delete them, in the file that has the linked circuit board.

You need to do the action I show in the video on the file that IS the circuit board. Right now you are in a file that refers to the circuit board as a linked reference.

When you edit linked files, any design that refers to them will show you yellow warnings telling you to update the reference.

Here is some reading to help you understand linked files.

Hello,

I would like to submit to you a new bug I observed today

When I select «Top» body (or body 1) and select «Create Copy» I get a copy of «Bottom» body (another one)

I don't understand why I select a body and I get a copy of another one…

but this is the easy part, because when I reselect the first body (Top) and get my «Top» and «Bottom» bodies in Move tool window (2 bodies selected), it still only copies the «Bottom» body, BUT, the original bodies move to the destination and the copied version remains in place

Voila. 🙂

Hope you can help me to understand the magic trick behind this

Regards

François

@Anonymous

This is interesting but it's hard to get the full picture looking at your video. Is it possible for you to share the design with me? If so, I can email you to handle the details privately.

Thanks,
