Mirror not working

I am trying to do a simple mirror command on my Mac.  I put a construction line in between my ketch at 45 degrees select mirror and I’m unable to select the sketch or the construction line. I of course checked my work a number of times and still nothing. I’m starting to think I’ve purchased the wrong extremely expensive computer.

I doubt it has anything to do with the computer you purchased.  It's a little hard to tell without more info (share the model, a screencast, even a screen capture would help), but some things to consider:

• There are two Mirror commands:  Sketch Mirror and Feature Mirror (in the Model workspace) - which are you using?  You cannot use Feature Mirror with sketches or sketch objects.  If you are using Sketch Mirror - are you sure you are editing the sketch that has the geometry you want to mirror in it?  Sketch Mirror only works on the active sketch
• You say "I put a construction line in between my ketch at 45 degrees".  Is that a sketch line with the construction attribute on it, or have you created a Construction (work) Axis?  If you have made a Work Axis, this will not work with either Sketch Mirror or with Feature Mirror.

So, with more info, we can most likely point out what the problem is.  Also, it's worth spending some time with introductory training material and videos.
