Making a component unique

I've been modeling a lot with components. This is fantastic because each component has it's own timeline. Say I was making a table that has 4 legs, I could make one leg component, duplicate it 4 times. No matter which leg I edit, they all get the same edits.

Here's a question:

Can I make a component unique? What I mean is that I want to build and copy those 4 legs, but then be able to make one unique so that I can start with it as a base, but continue to edit it.

I know I can copy out the resulting body into a new component, but I want the whole timeline as a base to start with, sketches, edits, everything.

Basically what I want to be able to do is copy a component, paste it in, but make that newly pasted in component not linked to the others... Is there a way to do that?

When you copy and paste a component you have the option to "Paste New" this will remove the link between the two parts.

Very simple. Copy the component just as before, but use "paste new" instead of paste.

Thanks!

I think when I came across the problem I had to either ask the question myself or I read it on the Forum by coincidence.

The difference in naming between "paste" and "paste new" is not exactly a dead giveaway 😉

But frankly I don't have a better idea for he naming myself...

Hello, is there an easy way to make existing components unique? Or do I have to delete them and re paste new? I know that when they are linked, you can right click and select break link. I'm hoping there is an easy way to break the instance between components which are all in a file?

Thanks

Thanks!

I also came here hoping to split a component from a pattern set.

(ie, I didn't make the component with cut/paste).

Any way to split those? Thanks!

See post #3.  Turn visibility off on the original (patterned) clone.  If you need to make changes in the initial component which will be reflected in the Paste New copy, move the Timeline to before the Paste New operation.

Hello, any better option for this yet? Paste New is dodgy I fear.

If you make a component using a few features, patten it. Copy one instant, the hide the bit you copied, then past new, all looks good for a while. Until you edit features of the newly pasted component.... which are within that components time line... Then all sorts of odd stuff happens.

"- Reference failures - Failed to get owner occurrence transform"

As I write this, I can see why the error occurs. Its like the going back in time and killing your grandad before your father was born type paradox.

But Fusion lets you do it, when maybe it shouldn't. In my view, when the copy new is created, it ought to recreate the geometry at source position, followed by a move translation related (and parametrically linked to) the pattern. This way, if edits are needed pre move to that unique component, it works with out meltdown.

I can't even work out how the paste new sequence works when I look at the newly pasted components time line... something is happening behind the scenes. The are missing features from the timeline?

Hello!

My solution for this comes with how the pattern is made to begin with. If you select the drop-down for your component and select the body instead, then all duplicated bodies in the patternHow to make all in Pattern Unique.png will be unique. Here:

I tried this solution, but when I want to edit a sketch in the new component, it's placed over the exact location as the one I copied.   How do I move the new component and all its references from the copied component?
