Make a surface mold from complex STL file

Hi all.

I have a STL file that I would like to create a "surface" mold of.

I reduce the number af facets and convert it to a brep.

I create a solid block a bit larger than the brep and do a combine/cut.

The problem is that the STL file is not a solid body so the result Im left with is not usable.

Is there a way to take a body thats not solid and make it solid, basically filling all the "air" inside it, or is it possible to do a cut that threats the bodies as solid or maybe a third option ?

Thanks in advance.

Boundary fill may work.  Split Body is also a possibility.  Attach your Fusion 360 file to the thread for more help.

For the simplicity of the problem I have downloaded a small thingiverse file where the same issue is.

I have attached the f3d file.

If you combine/cut the two bodies you can see the problem.

Thanks alot for the help/feedback.

You won't be able to make a simple two part mold for this because of the undercut surfaces and the separate internal pieces. The screencast shows the problem.    Clean those up, then boundary fill will work.

Screencast option has gone missing.  Here's the link: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/learn-explore/caas/screencast/Main/Details/a514bb6...

Hi bjoern_mikkelsen,

just to say that it's not ideal to use a not-math solid to make a mold.

I'm very new to F360 but, in general, using an STL can't give good results! Try to obtain a step file.

Regards

Marco

Thanks for the video, helped me cleanup the most parts, not sure I fully understand the boundary fill but I got it sorted 🙂

Thanks a lot for the time and effort to help me!

Just tried and you are right it seems like a step file is better. I will try to obtain a step file of the object.

Thanks.
