Joint with rigid group not moving sub components

I'm trying to fit an Arduino UNO into a case like in the Fusion 360 tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apkUQKNwHIo

The Arduino UNO STEP file I got from grabcad is pretty detailed and includes several sub components. I grouped them together as a Rigid Group but when I go to join the arudino uno mounting hole to the peg on the case, only the PCB moves:

I've tried deselecting everything and then selecting rigid body and re-selecting all the Arudino UNO components but its the same result.. any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

I downloaded a less detailed model and used align.

@Anonymous:If uploaded your STEP file, created a rigid group and was able to move everything as one piece as shown in the screencast. You might want to have following things in mind:

• If you select the components you want to select from the bottom right to the upper left. If you do so, Fusion will select everything you are touching. If your selection goes from the upper left to the lower right than only things will be selected which are completely surrounded.
• If you want to move your rigid group with the move tool, you want to move components and not e.g. bodies. This is because assemblies are for components and not for bodies.

I was able to get rigid groups to work with align but it did not work with Joint.

Sorry for the delay in the reply, but processing of screencast takes some time on autodesk's servers. It would be nice if you could share your f3d file. Im still not sure what you want to do. Something like this?

My screenshots show how the only the PCB moves and the other components stay in place even after applying rigid body.

This file format does not help a lot because it does not contain timelines, sketches etc. The best would be if you could right-click the first element in the browser and than Export -> Type  -> Fusion 360 (f3d) -> Save to my computer

Here's one way to cure the problem.

1. Open the original Arduino step file.
2. Create a new component.
3. Move all of the original components into the new component.
4. Select the new component and make it a Rigid group.
5. Rename the new component to ArduinoUno or whatever.
6. Copy the new component.
7. In the file with the enclosure, select Paste New.
8. You can now use a joint to position the Arduino.

"Local Export is not supported right now for distributed designs" - not sure what this means as I don't think I'm using a distributed design..

Trying to export as a Fusion 360 Archive from the web interface, hopefully that will work.

I agree that this enhances the reusability of the arduiono uno component because you only have to do the rigid joint once. But to achieve the joint it is not necessary to do all the steps in you solution. Just check my 2nd screencast.

That export worked. Could not see any problems in your project. I've created the rigid group and after that I've crated the joint. Everything worked find. But one thing to note. In the creation project of the joint, F360 only moves one component. If you finalize the joint all remaining components will follow. Are you "just impatient"?  😉

It's the process I use every time I import a model.  It not only cleans up the Browser, but makes reusing it simpler.

@etfrench: The browser is also clean if you just insert the imported sketch by using "Insert into current design" from the data panel. Check my last screencast.

Fusion 360 updated so things may have changed.

Please see the screenshot in the original post, even if I clicked 'OK', it didn't move the components. Before the update, no method using Joint worked.

After the update, I tried your method for creating a rigid body and mine and they both work if I click 'OK'.

Aside: compared to all the other Fusion 360 features I've used in my limited experience. This is the only one where the preview doesn't match what happens after clicking 'OK'. As a new user, I expect UI/UX consistency - there's nothing to indicated Joint operates any differently or anything in the docs. /cc Autodesk

Yes, this is true.  And you are correct that this is inconsistent, and that is a good point.  However, we did it for a reason:  If you have a very large assembly, and you choose to create a joint which is connected to a lot of other components, it can be distracting as well as possibly very slow, to preview the entire assembly moving to satisfy the new joint, especially if you have joint animation turned on.  I agree that in a lot of cases, it would be better to see a more realistic preview, but there are other cases where it is not.

I do think that this is something we can consider changing, or providing an option for you to change, in the future.

@jeff_strater, thanks for taking time to share the reasoning behind this feature. Its highly appreciated.

The demos friends have shown me are incredibly complex and can be built quickly which is part of the reason why we're using Autodesk tools and I'm getting familiar with them.

I understand its optimized for the power user where previewing the full assembly joint could be painfully slow.

However, as a newbie to the software or perhaps someone coming from another tool-set, its not really mentioned in the videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN4bvjfxQ4c nor could I find any documentation on it, but I found lots of topics about similar problems to this one that started this thread. I don't think they're necessarily correlated, only describing my journey on solving this problem.

So I spent a lot of time wondering what I was doing incorrectly.. turns out a software update fixed the issue, or maybe just restarting Fusion 360, I don't know. But I did learn to use align and still completed the project.

What I do know is a tool-tip or "Full preview" check option (default to off) would indicate the difference vs other functions aligning with my expectations and restoring a cohesive experience and eliminate the wondering whether what I was doing was incorrect or if it was something in the software.

Nice to hear that your problem is solved now. I'm not sure that this behavior is related to the updated. It's not mentioned in the release notes and I haven't experienced a change in the behavior for the last month. I'm more or less as new to Fusion than you are so I can understand your frustration in some points.
