Issues with a giant assembly (Including lag and a crash)

I'm working on designing my own keyboard that I can then 3D print. I have specific needs, so I'm having to design every key cap. As a result, this makes one huge assembly to be created.

 

The issues I have,

 

When navigating via the orbit, the 3D view stutters, whilst panning is fine.

When a component needs updating, the fusion 360 greatly lags (Attachment shows the first crash I got)

When moving an imported object, using the point feature heavily lags fusion 360.

 

I run fusion 360 in two processes, as from analyzing my normal use, the software doesn't seem to utilize my entire CPU when it comes to component updates. I have an I7 4790K.

 

I'm not sure how many objects are imported, but probably over 200 (Including sub-assemblies).

I'm using solidworks for 3D control (Orbit, panning ect.)

You are using what for 3D control (Orbit, panning ect.) ?

200 components is not a large assembly.

 

Running 2 instances of a 3D programs is usually not a good idea at all. Fusion 360 is fairly heavy on GPU memory.

I have to run two instances, otherwise the component updating lags the software too much.

@TrippyLighting, I think in his case it's not about the amount of components that in play (yes, 200 may not be that much), but it's also the amount of details he has in each component.

 

@Anonymous, will you please take a screenshot of the Task Manager Processes tab (Please arrange the table by CPU usage)? We need to see the CPU % that Fusion 360 takes!

We also need to see if all the CPU's are been used (Click on the Performance Tab and on the bottom you will see Open Resource Monitor. We need to see The CPU tab and the Memory tab)!

@Beyondforce Correct! Which is why I said that 200 components is not that much 😉

Here is a recording of an Autodesk University class by Phil Eichmueller and Joel Palioca on Large Assembly performance. It has many very helpful tips in it.  One of them is that you can improve viewport navigation performance by setting components that you are not working on to un-selectable.
