Insert Fastener greyed out, not able to use?
You have to be using a Team Hub for your storage. If you are using Single User Storage, you need to create a Team Hub. Take a look a this Forum Post to read about a similar issue.

That is up to you. A Team Hub has numerous advantages. Since you can share access to various Projects in a Team Hub, you can do group design and troubleshooting on the same project. When working together on a project, the Team Hub protects the files so only one can save changes at one time. So you could group build a complete assembly, different team members working on different sub-assemblies.
For a business, you can invite clients into your project with "read only" access or other users. Your imagination is the limit. I understand that Single User Storage will eventually be phased out so I would switch completely but that is up to you. I have not used Single User Storage for years and share files, work with other users around the world.
I am a retired designer but I do occasional consulting with other users. Where we used to have to share projects and files via email now I simple click on their, or my, shared Team Hub and upload or download or work directly in their project on their Team Hub, of course with their permission.

It depends on how much data has to be transferred. It has been years since I did it so I really cannot say.

The process can be done by Project. If you have more than one Project, try doing one at a time. I create a Project in my old Single User Storage to test, screen shot shown below.

I am not an Autodesk Developer but my guess is the Insert Fastener requires a place to generate and store the fasteners used. In a Team Environment they can easily create a Project location for this that is accessible for all present and future assembly models. This is not as easy to do in a Single User Environment.
