Importing OBJ files and then editing them in fusion360

So can anyone suggest methods I can try to take obj files and make them editable in fusion360?  even via 3rd party / external software?  and then import into fusion360. Everything I am trying so far just doesnt seem to work.

I guess I need to invest some considerable time in learning an application (assuming one even exists).  However I am having difficulty in determining if as an example meshmaker will do what I want.

They appear to be triangular I think which is the problem?

 

So I suppose the Q is can I do anything? ie is there any method? or with the state of software today am I wasting my time right now?

 

My problem is really the options I see like say meshmaker are so complex and time consiuming to learn that I am having huge difficulty in determining if they will do what I want without me spending a huge amount of time and then I find it was wasted.

If they are triangulated meshes then above a limit of 10k polygons, then Fusion 360 is really not good in working with meshes. Unless hat stuff is of a more of a prismatic/mechanical nature that you might've downloaded from Thingyverse. Then there are things that can be done with Fusion 360

I have been reducing them to under 10000, say 4000 as typical.

 

I guess I am more interested / looking for a strategic way forward as after 12~18months trying this stuff in fusion360 on and off seems no better.

 

I mean I am a hobbyist who  "plays" with things in my spare time with only a personal end goal so I have limited time to spend.

Without knowing what type of mesh you are talking about I cannot be of any further help, so please post an image or maybe even better one of your .obj files.

So here is yet another question:

 

Do you just want to download such items and modify them, or do you want to create original content ?

 

If you want modify existing mesh objects such as the attached, Autodesk Meshmixer is what you need to get your head around, It's widely used in the maker scene where people are eager to share and there are many good tutorials available that help you through it.

 

However, such objects usually do not originate in Meshmixer. This object can be created from scratch in Fusion 360 using a variety of tools probably in the Patch environment.

I have been trying to draw up such items from scratch and struggling. Simply trying to draw a free form 3D object on a 2D screen is very hard for me, and when I come to 3d print it it looks like crap. 

 

At the end of the day it was coming down to a too big a learning curve and too time consuming to do this from scratch and these files might have given me a quicker way to get to the end result.

 

Now for engineering work like brackets where this is no "free form" work I dont have any issues.   

 

Well drawing/lofting ship hulls just never worked either but I guess that is a similar problem to this.

I'm having the same problem. I purchased this .obj and imported it into Fusion. I want to scale it and pattern it.

I did this before with this same file, and I was able to manipulate it, but I either can't remember how I did it or it's no longer working.

I have given up trying to import objects if they "simply dont work right off", wastes too much time.  To be fair though the very idea is its an output file where the source is retained by the creator.

 

If its for 3d printing you could convert it to stl I think and scale it in the slicer.

 

Other ideas, try meshmixer.

That model was like textured with a leaf textured and an Alpha channel. It was likely meant as a prop for Sub-Modelers. When imported into Fusion 360 all th textures are lost and you only have the geometry to work with.

 

I would assume that at some point in time this was a quad mesh model, which can be converted into a T-Spline and can be modified easily. Maybe check in your Mesh preferences hat auto triangulation on import is not enabled.

Well I import OBJ files all the time and it works great. The thing is I think that you are not very familiar with

the correct approach here and also what will and what will not work.

 

That takes practise to get good at.

I've asked a number of questions in this thread to see what the nature of these .obj files are.

Please answer those or perhaps share one of the .obj files you are having problems with.

 

I import .obj quad meshes all the time mostly without problems.

Triangulated stuff requires very different workflows.

And don't forget to un-check this (fusion has this turned on by default for what ever reason)

some other mesh editing software will also automatically triangulate quad meshes because they only operate on triangulated meshes (i'm thinking mesh mixer here).   I've come across a few cases where someone thought they had a triangulated mesh because of this fusion setting, but actually had a perfectly good quad mesh.
