Import splines and wire data in Iges file

Hello,

I was trying to import an iges file that has both surfaces and the original splines that were used to build them, but Fusion only imports the surfaces. I tried to import to other 3d software and it imported all data without any sort of problems. Is this a limitation of Fusion or am I missing something about the way I should import an Iges into Fusion? I can't seem to find any dialog that allows me to control the Iges import settings.

Unfortunately, no.  Both IGES and STEP only import surfaces and solids into Fusion, none of the curve or "wireframe" geometry today.

Can you recommend some file type to import 3d wires into Fusion 360º?

Unfortunately, again, no, sorry, this is not in our immediate plans.  However, you're the second person just this week:  importing-quot-wires-quot-entity-type-from-step-files.

I don't know of a workaround, to be honest.

It would be good to capture this in an Fusion 360 idea station request.  If enough people need this capability, then it will get prioritized

DWG files will import with solids and curves, if the curves are on layers each layer is turned into a sketch. Here's an example.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for the information about the DWG. I was testing that and F360 failed to import my DWG file with curves but was able to import it as DXF.

Nonetheless I couldn't figure out out to edit a spline or match end points of the imported curves. I used the edit sketch but did not had the splines control points to edit and also used the move command to try to attach end points but also without success.

Can you please share any tip about how to do this in F360?

Hi Jeff,

These might seem as a tiny detail but being able to import 3D wires from IGES or STEP files can really improve the way F360 is able to get data created by designers in other 3d software.

Meanwhile I just posted in Idea Station a suggestion to implement this in F360 (http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-ideastation-request-a/import-3d-wire-data-from-iges-or-step...

As an alternative workflow, is there a way to extract curves from imported 3D geometry?

You might want to start another thread asking about editing splines and 3d curves, I've not tried what you're trying to do. Can you attaches an example DWG I'd like to see why it doesn't import.

Hi @Anonymous, I completely agree that importing wires from IGES and STEP is a useful capability.  I didn't mean to imply otherwise.  It's just a question of priority.  We initially set the priority higher for surface and solid translation, because that seemed the more common use case.  That's why adding the idea station request will help us.  As I said above, you're the second person this week that has requested this.  That indicates the start of a trend, I think.  We just need to get the priority of this task raised to the point where this gets on the Fusion road map.

With the big push to do all the things, this is a huge fail for reverse engineering. Exporting IGES or STEP files from desginX or polyworks with defined primitives is a must.

You can do this in Autodesk Inventor Professional (probably for 20 years) no workaround needed.  Use the right tool for the job my father always said.

Sad this feature is still not supported while it's a basic function available in multiple softwares.

It's not a matter of choosing the right tool, it's a matter of the good tool having a dumb limitation.
