Ideas on aligning multiple scans to each other.

Just after some advice/ ideas on how to align multiple scans in Fusion. I don't have the scans yet, as this will dictate if I need to scan anything specific.

What I am hopping to do is to 3D scan my hood and engine compartment to be able to find what the clearance is between the hood and the engine/what ever else is underneath it.

The way I see it I need 3 scans:

  • 1 with the hood shut (inc. parts of front bumper and side fenders),
  • 1 with the hood open to scan the engine bay
  • 1 of the hood to get the thickness so inc the inner and outer sides in the single scan.

The goal would be to use the open hood scan and just the hood, so I can use the cross section tool to get clearances.

The question is, how do I align these scans without eyeballing them to the one where the hood is closed, so I know the hood is in the correct location.

In the past I've used the extrude/dowls approach per this vid, but given the flat surface nature of the hood. I don't think this will work.

So any advice/ ideas on how i should tackle this?

Not watched the movie.

Scan the hood.  Place into file so that the centre line is parallel to the file origin.

Scan the engine bay, align it under the hood.

Probably use a sketch in both scan components for a Joint, that hinges the hood to the engine bay.

Might help….

Ok, but how do i do any of that. Do i just eye ball it and guess the centre line or the under the hood alignment?

Is there like an align based on mesh features/ common geometry? So I could use scan 3 as the base and then align the other 2 to it. Then I hide scan 3 and the 2 other meshes are perfectly aligned and give me the cavity.

@crogers1146

Can you Attach your scans here for demonstration?

Short answer is - no eyeballing required.

Each scan in it's own Component.

Adjust each component Origin placement.

As we have no idea where those origins will be, (Scan Machine options?)

I would be building construction sketches in the scan component to assist.

Yeah thats kind of how I've being doing it, but it requires me to place the construction sketches for the 3 sketches in the same location (relative to each other, hence kinda the eyeballing part). Was hoping there would of being like a geometry or feature align.

The scanner I am using is a cheepo, there is no global align/refence planes.
