How to Shell a Loft Body

I created a vacuum nozzle with the Loft command and two rails.  I can only seem to Shell from the bottom surface not the top.  Ideally I want the nozzle open all the way through.  What can trip up the shell command?

The Shell command does not go all the way through, that is the way it works, a shell is only open at one end, if you want it all the way through you can do something along the lines of the attached file.

 

It does "Shell" from the top down and the bottom up so there must be something wrong with your model, in design mode follow the steps in the History to see what I did to create the shape.

Select one side then select the other then set the dimension, if you do the dimension first or after you select the first side you can only do one side.

Ok, I see a difference in your work flow from mine.  I created 3 sketches and Loft between them.  In your example it is a single sketch.  I wouldn't think that matters, Loft didn't complain.

 

Is there something wrong about the top sketch that allows the Loft but not the Shell function?

It seems that your 3rd sketch is a 3D sketch.

This does not require a 3D sketch, so I would recommend you start again from scratch with fully constrained and dimensioned 2D sketches. and then come back. Make sure you address any yellow icons in your timeline before posting 😉

Yes,  2D sketch worked, not sure why 3D wouldn't work the same. 

 

The Loft body was created and I assume Shell works on the body not the sketch.  Humm weird.

It could work the same but is a pain to edit and adds unnecessary complexity to something very simple. 

If a 2D sketch does the work there's no need to use a 3D sketch.

Of course, the shell command works on a body. How would you shell a sketch?

Not that it would Shell a sketch, I wondered if perhaps the sketch/sketch type played a part in how the Shell function went about its business.

Ahh, no it would not.

I think the two arcs you used as rails created the problem.

But those aren't really needed. If you look at the loft options you can set the top profile from "connected" to "direction" and adjust the weight. That will likey give you what you want without the need for rails.
