How to replace a face with replace face

Dear Community

I have found serious trouble working with the replace face command. Instead of doing the job as expected, 75% of the time it throws me an error, even in the most simple us cases.

Replace Face 1 with Face 2, throws an error. Why is this not working and what to do to get it running?

You have 2 faces that are not overlapping.

It works like Extrude to Object that one is under the other.

If face 1 has to be the same height of the face 2, you can extrude face 1 above the level of face 2,

use Face 2 in Split body to trim to the taper angle.

There would be other ways.

Might help....

Thank you,

Do you see any point that replace face has the option "until extended" turned off , does this make any sense at all?

not sure what you mean here:  "Do you see any point that replace face has the option "until extended" turned off".  There is no "until extended" option in Replace Face.  Replace Face is designed to only work with a target surface that is "overbuilt".  So, it will fail here:

but will succeed in this case (overbuilt circle):

Thanks for explaining, I do get the current state of replace face now.

What I mean is the following: why is replace artificially* limited? Is there any possible benefit in limiting replace face to not work like in any other CAD system?

I ask this because in the eye of a CAD user (and the math behind the geometry kernel) , the overbuild step (enlarging faces until overlap) is completely unnecessary and adds cumbersome steps without providing any value whatsoever.

thanks for checking back

*because in other features like extrude and split body the until extended routine works as expected

@Anonymous can you please let us know what the state of this one is?

still have replace face not working as expected,
It should work "until extended" without the user having to create the extension each and every time, very annoying workflow.

Also there is zero benefit of limiting replace face (most powerful command in normal CAD) to only overlapping faces or planes.

What other CAD system?

Can you provide example?

Yes of course:

for instance Siemens NX, from Version 5 on (10y ? Ago)

replace face works as expected: select source face A , make it like target face B, done

—> it just works with the underlying geometric description of face B

most simple powerful command for multibody modeling.

plenty of videos on YouTube

Hi, is there a way to unlock this limitation?

With the limitation in place, the utility of replace face is literally slashed to a tenth of what it is when it can be used like in other CAD standards.

Thanks

That was already solved in the Stone Age and now it rides through the target again?

the split face tool has the missing solution for replace face to work as expected built right in. Its called “extend face” meaning a natural extension of a selected face.

why @Anonymous chose to omit this in replace face (rendering it almost useless, compare to NX) is a mystery for anyone who believes in the concept of good UX

@Fusion360 do you plan to fix this now ?
Feature is not usable because it is not designed to the end --
