How to make the grid on the x y plane

I was making a model and the grid seems to have moved from the x y plane to the x z plane. I don't know how to get it back and i don't know why it has changed. Maybe the grid is adaptive to whichever plane I am sketching on. if so it is not changing back to where I want it. I have tried changing preferences for "default modelling orientation" to z up, but this does not help.

What happens if you right click on the XY plane in the browser and select New Sketch (if you are already in a active sketch - make sure you End Sketch first).

Which grid are you referring to?  There is the layout grid, which can be controlled from the grid menu in the bottom of the screen:

This grid is only visible if you have turned it on, and if you are not currently in sketch mode.  This grid is controlled by the "Y up" vs. "Z up" switch.  It can only be placed on the XY plane (Z up), or the XZ plane (Y up).

There is also the sketch grid, which is only visible when you are in sketch mode, and shows the grid for the plane of that sketch.  It can be on any arbitrary plane - whatever the sketch plane is.  If you are in sketch mode, you can control the visibility of the sketch plane from the sketch palette:

If that doesn't help you, it would be good if you can post a screencast of what you are seeing, and we can figure out what your concern might be.

(... but where is the Zup/Yup switch?)

If you are looking for an answer to that click on your name in the top right corner and choose Preferences, there is a drop down list next to "Default modeling orientation" Choose your desired Axis. You may need to start a new file.
