How to get Groups working in time line again?

I had a number of items grouped together in the top level time line.

Then I realized I wanted to add an adjacent item to the group.  So I expanded the group.

After that, I was unable to select any items in the time line, anywhere, and completely unable to create a group.

Is the time line that buggy, or did I do something wrong?

Please advise.

It seems once you create a group, it lasts forever and no groups can be formed using any of its members.

My question is now:

Can I dissolve a group so that a new one can be created?
